While there isn't any hydro fluid (I'm changing and it cleaning out), can I idle my engine?

I wouldn't after about 5 minutes you can/could burn up the pump. Unless you keep the clutch pedel down all that time if its an N tractor that way the pump will not be running

If the PTO is NOT engaged, the hydaulic pump will not turn.

However, the upper transmission shaft WILL be turning at engine speed without lube, and since the 8N is a constant-mesh transmission, there will be a number of gears spinning at different speeds in relation to that shaft, also without lube.

If you MUST run it, keep your foot on the clutch.
