Not N related, but Ford related, and definatly a stupid repair.

Was headed about 150 miles North on buisness in my 1967 F100 back in '94. Pulled off the interstate to gas up, and the engine was hammering like mad. Thought "Oh great! Rod!!". Called for a back up vehicle and tow home, and completed my trip. When I got back, I tore into her. Pan came off, no aparent rod problems. Baffled, I pulled the engine, and had the pistons out, and still no aparent problems located. Rolled the motor over to pull the crank, and discovered two teeth missing off the timing gears showing behind the timing cover that I didn't take off!

Many hours of head scratching, and man did I feel dumb when I found what the problem was. Could have been about a two hour repair.

53 NAA - Just did major engine work and finally had the thing running good. Pulled a good load and all. Book says after running a while you may need to adjust clearances on valves. Ran it pretty hard for an hour or so. Started to miss and cut out so I proceded to adjust valves. Pull valve cover and run it up with oil splashing everywhere. Adjust & check, adjust & check, adj..... Got progressively worse every time. Then after bout an hour and a half of this, I decided that it run better if I was to charge the battery. Dead generator!!!!!

Went out to replace gas tap on my 2N with a new one, brought the tools, got ready to change "on the fly". Pulled the old one out, stuck my thumb over the hole(gas pouring out), tossed the old tap into the back of my pickup(10feet away) and reached for the new one..... .it was still on the bench in the garage. That is when I found out I was home alone.

That's awesome! Stumpy, you and 8N Nut are the kind of guys I love to hang around with. Y'all do the same dag-blamed things I do! When I first got the tractor all back together after rebuilding EVERYTHING, me and a buddy tried for a good half-hour with a 12V jumper truck to start the thing (still 6V tractor, jumped direct to starter due to tight new engine). About every other try, I had either forgotten to turn the key on, or the gas on, or both...round and around we go!

When I bought my 860 I spent several months repairing or replacing almost everypart on it, got it up and running great, put the carry-all on to take the trash up the road got to where I was going and it stalled, this tractor always starts on a half a crank and runs great, now I can't get it to start, called a friend to come and tow me back to the house to find I ran it out of gas and didn't even think to turn on the reserve.

Ran fine to the barn, but could not get it started more then a few seconds the next day. Tried starter fluid and worked for a few seconds. Pulled the plug to the carb and got no drip. Then I discovered I was out of fuel... Felt pretty stupid over that 20 minute trouble shooting afair.

Well, this wasn't a repair.. but it was dumb..

Feburary, I had just finished the refurb of my 2n.. had it nice and painted up shiny.. and took it to a show. Got to the show, and killed the battery trying to start it, in frustration, I reaced up to turn the key off and pull it out only to find out that I had never turned the ignition key actually 'on'. Ok.. so i got a jump, and got her started and backed her off the trailer. This 2n has a 3 wire alternator conversion, and I use a momentary toggle switch to excite the alternator ( previous owner had alread drilled the hole in the dash.. so I used that method as well.. though a diode would have prevented the problem I'm about to tell you about.. ). Ok.. so I've just had it jumped.. I back it off the trailer.. and forget to excite the alternator.. I let it run 10 minutes to 'charge' and then it stalls out from a dead battery.. as I had never excited it....Ok.. one more jump.. key on, started.. excited.. and then it was fine the rest of the day... figures...

Here's another story.. not dumb.. just lazy..

I don't carry my N keys with me.. but rather have them hangin in my den in this tractor themed key box. It never fails that I would need a tractor to do something, and have to run in to get a key. Since i keep an aligator clipped wire in my 8n tool box for diagnostics, I got inthe habit of just jumpering around the key switch whenever I needed to use the tractor, instead of running up to the house and back for a key.. It got to the point that I just left the aligator clip wire hanging clipped together around the steering column for use 'when/as needed' . A buddy was by the other day and noticed the wire and asked what it was for.. I paused for a moment and then said 'spare key'.. we both got a good laugh out of that one..

I like your second story. Sounds like the kind of thing I would do. I'm still laughing. But, you know, where I live it would make some sense. Because kids in the neighborhood could try starting up my 8N if they found the key, but they probably couldn't with a wire (at least most of them).

Now you can take both those things off your winter maintenance list and add one of those gas gages with the floatie thing like the riding mowers use. Don't feel bad, man. Done some of them myself.

Had taken sediment bowl off to clean it out. When I put it back on the 8n gas would not flow , ( vapor lock), After scratching my head trying to figure out why the gas would not run My father walk over turn the gas on and lossen the bowl until the gas forced the air out.

After almost 2 weeks of rain it let up for a day or so, and I decided to blade the road. Found the key in the ON position. Must've been on for 2 weeks. Tried to start, and it turned over fine but no start. Removed the presumed burnt coil and tested it on the bench with a battery charger. It made a weak spark. Must be burned points then, I thought. Removed the distributor and found the points just fine. Must be bad condenser, I said to self. Tested condenser with VOM. Nope. It's fine. Put it all back together. Still no start. Drained fuel from carb bowl. That's good and just fine. Check for spark at plugs. Nope. Removed distributor cap and saw all the water droplets/condensation inside. Blew it out with compressed air, and it started right up. :}
