I am in the process of repairing the hood of my 49 8-n. After removing the inner supports I found a lot more rust than I thought. I sand blasted the majority of it off (and through) and sprayed it with rust converter. My question is can I patch the holes from behind with fiberglass and the front with body filler, or do I need to weld in new metal. It is the original hood so I would like to save it. Thanks

You must weld if in fact the strength of the part has been compromised due to rust out. That is for instance, if you had rust thru at a corner where the hood is bolted to the dash, then you would have to weld since fiberglass will crack eventually. Figure for your purposes that fiberglass is just a hole filler with little or no support qualities and you won't miss. By the same token, you can weld everything if you want, but, man weld is hard to file, grind, and smooth out. My $.02
