I seem to be stripping out the geared portion of the positive drive started bendix. I am on my second on in about 2 hours of operation.

I've had some clutch stickage issues so the first one didn't bother me, but I make sure the clutch is free before starting and I just stripped out another one. Any other ideas?

I am going to have to crack the tractor anyway to get the parts out now. So things to look for at that time would be nice.

Rob..... ...the 12 volt battery really slambs the 6 volt starter bendix into the flywheel ring. Usually this is NOT a problem. I'm thinkin' yer starter motor LONG bendix shaft might be "bent". Thens theres always the real possiblility of the starter flywheel ringgear being so worn your abnormally wearing your starter bendix too. I'd check for bent shaft and carefully reach my finger inside the starter hole and touchy-feely the ring teeth..... ...Dell

Has this tractor been converted to 12v, and still using a 6v starter? My rebuilder says the cheap bendix sometimes don't hold up well with the conversions. Where are you getting the starter drives from? Perhaps a different type or manufacturer? There are about what? 3 different type available I think.

Bendixes are all from Tractor Supply.

The 48 8N is converted to 12V and I BELIEVE it still has the original 6V starter. It certainly looks original and I have not changed it out. I bought the tractor already converted to 12v.

My step father has a 12-volt 8-n. He was having trouble with his starter also. He had the timing set too fast and it was kicking back against the starter, breaking the starter drives. It is something to check anyway.

Would the timing wander over time? It's been fine for over two years.

If you are still running points your timing will change as the pionts wear.

Generally speaking, the rubbing block on the points wears more than the points, making the gap smaller and the timing LATER. (Less chance of kickback.)

That is true , it would retard the timing. But firing after top dead center could cause a kick on the back side of the drive gear until running if not throttled just right. I know this because I had this problem with my 8N. The distributor was so bad I had to set the points after an hour of use. If I did not have them just perfect and the throttle just perfect it would try to start and the starter would slam and bang untill it started. I did replace the distributor and have since had no trouble with the bendix. I am still running a 6 volt system.

Sounds like you need a flywheel ring gear and an inputshaft seal. HTH. Rick H. Ga.
