What does the governer do?

I bought my 2N about a year ago but did not have time to play with it until now. I started by reading about the tune-up procedure in the archives. Tommorrow I will (wife-willing!) check the compression. But step one got me really looking at the engine (after I cleaned it) and I saw something that I could not make sense of. I checked the service manual and saw that this thing is called a governer. What is its function in life? How does it work? If it is not working, could it cause a lack of power under load?

It keeps your rpm's constant, it works in conjunction with the carburator to minimize surging under load.

Think of a governor as it applies to a tractor as 'cruise control for the engine'. ray

Hi Ron! The governer senses engine speed and and ajusts the throtle to compensate for load. it uses weights and springs to acomplish this.
Im sure someone will have a better answer for you
shortley. Hope this helps some, Duane
