if I ordered Zanes Live thang and installed the filter for the fluids would it help remove any water that could find its way into the fluid? Is it a good thing in the 8n's to have a filter for this fluid or is the system pretty much just bullet proof?

I am a little new to the 8n stuff.

Thanks!

The filter will not remove much water I don't think. It is good for removing solid particles from the oil though.

I have sold a lot more without the filter than with but really don't have any feedback to speak of as to the value of the filter.

It sure does make the tractor seem like a whole other machine once you have the live hydraulics though.

I am about to inherit another 8N that my brother in law owned when he died and a nephew bought. It is a 48 like the one he bought new in 48 and I mostly learned to drive on. I am going to install a LIVE THANG on it too. I already have one on my 52 8N. He had started restoring it and had it in pretty good shape before he died. New brakes and axles and hubs and an engine job. The other nephew painted it for the owner and used the wrong color and lost the stabilizer brackets that I will have to replace. I may even paint it again to the right color. I will then have five tractors and two acres of land with the house and shop covering some of it. My wife keeps telling me I need to sell something but when I talk it over with the tractors none of them wants to go?????
What's a feller to do?

Zane

I am way behind the power curve of the Zane tractor/land ratio as well, but I have hit upon the happy expedient of "giving my wife a tractor" to avoid looking like I have more than I need. Yep, the "41 9N is "hers". So far she seems to let me play with it whenever I want (or work on it, which is about as often). Also, I noticed that those bright red seat pads were vaguely heart-shaped, so got her one for Valentines Day (Of course I got her some sparkley little rocks and flowers as well...I am not stupid.)but she seemed to like the seat cover pretty well and I get to sit on it whenever I want. Might work for you too!

Well, maybe if you sold the wife you would have room for another tractor too. (I think I tried that one time and it did get a tad expensive but the peace was worth it.)

 Well, ya could. . . . . in reply to ZANE, 12-01-2004 14:36:20
Zane,
Git a pitcher of one of them monster old timey steam tractors. Admire it fer a couple days. Then announce yer tryin to swing a deal to trade one of the N"s straight across fer the monster. Considerin the hobbies some men have, tractors ain"t so bad after all. If ya sold em, ya"d have to take the money and spend it on whiskey and wild women and what ya didn"t spend ya"d have to waste.

Hmmmm..... .that's 2.5 tractors to the acre; I've got 10 acres & 3 tractors, so I'm 22 tractors short on the Zane Tractor to Land Ratio. Guess I'd best get busy & find a few more!

Five tractors for two acres? I think I'm under-equipped!

I just keep talking to the tractors and leave the wife out of the conversation.

Yeah, I've got stray tractor trouble out at my place too. The durn things just kinda move in on ya. A feller hates to turn 'em out in the cold to fend fer themselves though. They're just such loveable little creatures !!

I wouldn't call the system bulletproof.. but probably very 'fault tolerant' would be safe.

Adding a filter in the return line will give you a hyd system that is at least partially filtered.. much like your crankcase filtering.

While not necescary.. it would be an upgrade and an improvement, and may hlp the life of the pump and deffinately the valving, and deffinately won't hurt anything.

I'm sure the filter probably helps keep the hydraulic fluid somewhat cleaner. The live hydraulics that the Live Thang gives you are a real nice improvement in your tractor. I wouldn't bother installing it for the filter. If the boot on your transmission shift lever is good you don't need to worry about much getting into the system.
Later, Lee
