REMOVE AIR CLEANER CANISTER. SCRAPE AND WIRE BRUSH AS MUCH GUNK AS YOU CAN FROM EXTERIOR. ON BOTTOM OF AIR FILTER CANISTER THERE ARE THREE TABS THAT SECURE A COVER THAT RESTRAINS THE WIRE MESH FILTER. CAREFULLY WORK THESE TABS (SHARPENNED PUTTY KNIFE WORKS BEST,BUT BE CAREFUL. TAKE YOUR TIME AND DON'T BREAK THE TABS) SO AS TO LOOSEN THE RESTRAINING COVER. AFTER THE COVER HAS BEEN REMOVED, TAKE AN EXTRA LONG NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS AND WORK THE MESH LOOSE AND PULL OUT. THERE ARE TWO SIMILAR PIECES OF MESH. IF THE INNER PIECE IS DIFFICULT TO REMOVE, USE YOUR NEWLY SHARPENNED PUTTY KNIFE TO FREE THE MESH BY SLIDING IT BETWEEN THE OUTER CANISTER SHELL AND THE OUTSIDE EDGE OF THE MESH. TAKE THE MESH WHILE IT IS STILL IN IT'S ORIGINAL SHAPE AND SECURE IT WITH TY-RAPS CONFIGURING THAT SHAPE. THIS WILL HELP IN RE-INSTALL. DUMP (2) SECTIONS OF MESH IN PAINT THINNER AND AGITATE OVER NIGHT. THROUGHLY CLEAN THE CANISTER W/ DE-GREASER AND SOLVENT AND RE-INSTALL. THIS WHOLE PROCESS TOOK ME APPROX. (2) HOURS.

I put my TO-30 air cleaner in a five gallon bucket, filled it wth lacquer thinner and let it sit over night. Poured the lacquer thinner out of the air cleaner after sloshing it around some then let it soak in the same stuff. I repeated every time I walked by the bucket that day (3-4 times) The next day I drained the filter again and let it dry out and installed it. I couldn't see that taking it apart was worth the risk of damaging it and then looking for a replacement that was probably dirtier than what I started with. Now I replace the oil whenever I can't see the bottom of the cup through the oil. Works for me.
