I"ve got a 51 Model 8N that won"t run smooth unless I pull the choke out about 3/4"s the way. It runs fully in but its rough, as you can tell by the engine sound. Any ideas on what it might be: I"ve replaced the plugs, points, coil, and fuel filter, drained out the gas now I"m scratching my head! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Bill

Farmer..... .....you've done all the eazy stuff. Intake manifold leak is next eazy stuff, spray with WD-40, to stop leak.

But I gotta sneakin' hunch, yer gonna haffta go the next step and do the dreaded "compression test". Ford specs: 90 psi min (dry). Remove all yer sparkies. Do 5-puffs and writter down. Then give the sparkie-hole a squirt (1oz or tablespoon) of engine oil and dooer'gain. Writter down. No change wet or dry, burned exhaust valve. +10+20psi normal worn engine. +20+30 tired worn enging in need of rebuild. How the oilpressure? ..... ...Dell

Probably an air leak somewhere; that's why it smooths out when you give it more fuel (choke). If it isn't obvious, start spraying some WD-40 around and see if you can find it; if it is small it might smooth out when you spray the spot and that stops the leak for a sec. Don't start a fire, don't ask me how I know.

I can give you some hints, but if you put "runs rough" in the archive box and hit enter you will find pages and pages of solutions, as this is a common problem.

When I had a rough running problem on my 48 8N, I found it was a leaking manifold gasket sucking in extra air through the intake. Once I replaced this gasket, fixed the manifold with a file where the exhaust gasses had eaten into the metal, and put some JB Weld on the block and smoothed it out where it was eaten into as well - I could finally run my tractor without having to pin the choke back. Now it runs smoothly and will run rough if I do keep the choke on.

There are many other things it "could" be, and you can find a boatload of clues through the archive.

Good luck,
Dan
