Does anyone out there have a soapstone woodstove? My wife and I are thnking of buying one, but heard that they take a while to get up to temperature. Is this true, and if it is, how long does it take? How about flat black paint versus the porcelain finish? Is it worth paying the extra for the porcelain? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've got a soapstone woodstove. It's great. It's a Hearthstone (Made in Vermont!) I guess that it does take a bit longer for it to really start throwing heat, but it's NOT a big difference.

I like this stove better than any I've had because it seems to be a more "even" heat. The stone holds the heat longer, which is a great advantage.

I'd never want anything other than soapstone.

If you have high humidity situations, especially during the non heating season, the paint finish will eventually start to rust. Then you have to wire brush and paint with a special high temperature stove paint. The porcelain will never rust unless you chip it. I hope this helps you.

They do take longer to get up to temperature, ut they hold the heat a lot longer. The finish is you personal choice. Woodstoves get very hot and can run you out of a room.----Rob

John, PA - Sorry to disappoint you, but you must have me confused with someone else. Due to the posting restrictions, I can only log on as "Rich in NJ". I used to simply log on as Rich. You probably got me confused with Rich, NJ. I'm not him! Have a good one!
