There is a lever on the center housing left side about 2 or 3 inches behind and about 1 or 2 inche below the protrusion for the starter drive. it is a lever about 18 inches long. I have searched the owner's manual, FO-4, The 1952 master parts manual, and the original ford repair manual. Might have missed it, but I cannot figure out what it does. After removing the starter and looking through the hole I can see it moves a rod forward and rearward. Gimme a clue guys!
Thanks,
Phillip

You said you could feel 3 distinct positions on your Sherman shifter; low, neutral and high. Well, this should be a nice surprise for you: when you get into the neutral / center position, pull it out to the left maybe ˝” or so, and pull it backwards. You are now in direct drive, as though there was no auxiliary transmission in there! My 8n has the Sherman combo, and even the guy selling it did not know there were 3 ranges to it. It was only after I researched it more that I found out about the middle position. Couldn’t wait to get home that night to verify it. When I get off the tractor for a short time now, I leave the engine running, PTO off, tranny in neutral, Sherman in neutral. I feel fairly safe using this “double neutral” method. Even if I bump the 4 speed shifter getting off / on the tractor, there is still no power coming into the tranny. If I am committing a safety violation here, someone please tell me!

Sure did Russ. I was way off base thinking the Sherman installed inline with its own outside housing. Come to think of it this would require new rsdius arm, drag links, etc. Inow believe as Dell, and John said, it IS a Sherman. Looks like both the step down a nd combo had the same type shifter, so I still have to resolve that issue. Hopefully I can work out my elect. problems this morning (Tue.) and get it running.
Thanks to all for your help
Phillip

Phillip..... .....boy are you "clueless" (grin) thats the shifter lever for the dealer installed "Sherman" aux tranny. Comes in OverDrive, UnderDrive, and most desireable 3-speed combo with a crooked dogleg shifter lever. Most 9N's had the OD. Works in all 3-speed tranny gears for 6-speed foward and 2-reverse. High OD gives about 18mph but I don't recommend that because 9N's brakes when good are just barely addiquate..... ....Dell

Dell, The shift lever is crooked. Comes out of center housing and runs parallel for a couple of inches before turning vertical. I am not convinced it is a "Sherman" According to my very limited research a sherman is "sandwiched" between engine and center housing. This lever comes out of center housing itself. It has 3 distinct positions or notches that can be felt. What one would associate with Hi,Neutral, and Low.
Guess I'llexperiment when I get the electrical straightened out and get it started.

That is a Sherman aux. trans. it will give the tractor 3 higher or three lower or a combination of both according to which one it is.

phillip, that's your high low shift lever. with your 3 speed trans, the high and low selector gives you a total of 6 speeds forward and 2 reverse. I've never needed the high gears myself, I just leave it in low.
