Overhauled the hydraulic pump 2 years ago and the 3-pt has worked fine ever since (didn't work at all before). But when it's cold out, it is very slow until the tractor warms up. Then it's fine. I just added new fluid that I got at TSC "for 1939-1953 Ford tractors" (don't recall the numbers) and was wondering if I should have used something less heavy for the winter. Also, I just received a Live Thang in the mail (thanks Zane) and I understand that will speed it up, but since it's my wife's present to me I can't install it til after Christmas. Arrgh! Anyway, is the slow hydraulics normal in cold weather?

Here in the northern part of Wisconsin, have to start the '52 8n with the clutch pushed down due to the heavy hyd fluid. Depending on temp, might take 5 minutes or more, letting off the clutch now and then. Even with 6 volt system, always started up, don't see reason for 12 volt conv. From the reports here, can't understand the hip for 12 volts. Even at negative 20 degrees on my farm, old trusty Case always started. Those where the days, tired, wet, hung over, truck won't start, etc, grin!!! Craig

You definately have to use the 134 oil with the "LIVE THANG". The gear pump is not happy with the heavy oil and it will whine and tell you about it.

As far as the lighter oil making the lift leak down faster that is true too. It is also true that it will leak down a little faster because of the nature of the gear pump. There is some back flow through the gear pump when it is not turning because it is not a 100% positive displacement pump. It is about 98% positive displacement. The piston pumps are 100% positive displacement pumps and if there are no internal leaks by valves or rings and gaskets the piston pump leaks no oil back through it.

Just don't lie down under the engine you have hanging on the boom pole and go to sleep because it will gradually come down and squash you! :O)

Zane, I have been using standard NH hydraulic fluid for an 8n with my Live Thang. It does whine but works perfect. I will change it to 134 oil. Does using the normal fluid for about 100hr damage the pump? And is there anything specific I should look for in addition to being 134 oil? Thanks.

Now, if I raise the 7 ft blade, it will gradually drop to the ground after about 3 days. Not bad. If I change to the the lighter fluid and it drops in one day, that should still give me time to get out from under it even if I should happen to fall asleep down there (grin)...

I'd say John And Jim are right on. The aux pump will need thinner oil.. like the 134d oil. The 90wt gl-1 is thick, and is very noticeable when it is cold.

Paul,
You'll probably want to switch to the thinner Ford/New Holland 134d spec hydraulic oil, especially with your new Live Thang. I recently installed a Live Thang on my '51 8N and it works like a charm. But, I had to switch from the original 90wt GL-1 to 134 to keep the Live Thang pump quiet. Plus, the thinner oil makes the lift MUCH faster. The only down side is that the lift may drift down faster, but that shouldn't be a problem if your hydraulics are in good shape.

John

The hyd. fluid you put in it is most likely 90 wt. GL1 or its equivalent. I live in GA and I can tell the difference in cold weather - 30 - 40 degrees. I've never run it below 30 and hope I don't need to. I suspect that the colder it gets, the slower it will pump. Thank goodness I live in the South. :-) GA Jim
