Well, I am starting to feel like an idiot!
My second day with my 8N has turned sour!
On the way home from the short trip - less than 1/3 mile - to my neighbors shop to replace a damaged fan belt, my 8N has some problems!

I was not running the tractor too hard - about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle at best - then my tractor started to violently SURGE - SURGE - SURGE forward (up and down like it was sick) and then it wouldn't run right in any gear - then it finally stopped and now it won't restart. I checked the obvious things like fuel, air, oil, etc. No problems - I checked to make sure that we hadn't knocked any wires loose anywhere on the tractor. All in place. This tractor used to start up INSTANTLY via the original push button and with great strength. Yes I have tried the choke as well.

It sounds like it wants to start - (actually it sounds EXACTLY the same with the key on and the key off) strong starting but no complete turnover. This is odd considering that the tractor was working great for like 45 mins after the belt change. We started and stopped it and tested the PTO and lift.

I had witnessed this strange 'surging' just once this morning before the belt change - but I figured it was just a freak occurance. When it stopped the final time in the driveway, I thought I heard a distinctive click or snap when it stopped -

Please help me out in anyway you can. What should I check now? Everything to my knowledge was working great! Fuel is on and fuel tank is full!
ARRGGH! Please help! thanks!

Andy

Ok - I jumped started my battery since I knew it was getting weak with all of this starting and such. I went through the plugs and I found that they were all very old and the plug wire going to #2 at the block was not even intact anymore! There was just a tiny little piece of wire but I pulled it - it wasn't even holding on to anything. Could that be the could of the surging or engine problems? The front mount distributor, cap, condenser, points and all are brand new and like I said this thing started like a champion on the first push with no problems!

I jumpered out the ignition switch and no dice.
Gas is getting the carb - I need to check for spark to the plugs - should I remove them and lie them on the block or is there a spark plug test cable I can get? The air is clean and available - fuel lines and filters are good - and electrical connections are in question b/c of the plugs I found. What is purpose of that small wire going to the top of the distributor?

Thanks ---- Any help?

Andy

The wire to the top of the distributor is the hot wire from the resister to the coil. Surging, which I guess you still have, could also be a misadjusted main needle valve on the carb. It also could be a governor that is not working right, although that would not cause sputtering. Surging could also be bad or stuck distributor weights or bad distributor shaft bushing. The way I test for spark at the plug is to pull a wire off, stick a plastic handle screwdriver in the wire end, hold the screwdriver close to the block, and have someone crank it over and watch the spark. Keep on eliminating the variables, you'll eventually find the problem. My $.02

Hi Andy

Ignition or electrical wires may have been
disturbed when belt was installed.
I suggest you check if all the high tention
wires are well sitted in their sockets
(coil and dist cap) and little wire to the distributor and coil.

Hipe it helps

Good luck

Joe Ferguson

Andy, Take heart all is not bad. That 8n of yours is a wonderful looking machine and I'm sure your get it running again....soon. 1st thing I would check is the 3 filters in the fuel system. If this tractor has been sitting a long time crude might have clogged one of these filters. Another thought; is the fuel fresh? Or could water have gotten into the tank from sitting unused? I hate to admit this one, but when I first got my 8N it took me about 3 months to figure out that little valve just under the gas tank. I was always running out of gas until I figured out that I was running on the 1 gal reserve and not the 9 gal main. Remember these are simple durable machines and the do run well. Best of luck, don't be afraid to ask questions
and I know you'll figure it out.

Andy, Take the intake pipe loose spray just a touch of ether into it. If she starts its a fuel problem, probably carb, but check the fuel line and filters. Check for good spark, should be a bright thick blue color. More info will come when others view. Just something to start with.
Let us know your finding.

These 50 year old tractors will throw every odd ball running problem at you, I guarantee, but you will find out over time what to look for. Just from reading this Board, I would jumper around the,( believe it or not,) the ignition switch next time you have the problem. The ignition switches are notorious gremlins on these machines, and the switches let you start up, but then get hot and break contact. That's the first variable I would eliminate. My $.02
