8N belly mower; Woods or Yanmar?

I need to fit a mower onto my 49 8N and think due to the terrain (some hills) that a belly mower is my best bet. Comments are welcome on that conclusion...but I am wondering how well the Woods belly mower works on an 8N (and which Woods model number you are speaking of). Also, I found a 60" used Yanmar belly mower...if the clearance is ok so that it will fit between the front and back wheels (I think it will)....how difficult will it be to jury rig a deck raising and lowering arrangement? All the deck has is two 90 degree flanges welded onto the deck surface a few inches back from the front or leading edge. Currently there are 10" lengths of chain attached to each of these flanges. There are two 8" wheels 5-6" ahead of the front edge of the deck...
The price is right...I think I can get the deck which has about 5 years of light use on it for 3-400 dollars....
What do you guys think? Please advise.

JMTCW, but I would certainly consider a rear mount finish mower rather than use a belly mower. Mounting and dismounting a belly mower is not easy if you have lots of other things to do with the tractor. I have a used Woods RM59 that I picked up for a couple of hundred bucks and then put another two in it for a new belts and blades. It mows like my riding mower and does not stick out so far behind the tractor. My yard is fairly hilly and it does just fine. Takes about 5 minutes to hook up or take off. If you can borrow one, you might want to try it before you go the belly mower route. For a dedicated mower, I would look at a Cub lo-boy.

For that kind of money,I make it work..A new Woods belly will set you back some serious coins..Have you checked out Smiths big riding mower,8N with a belly mower is a cool piece of equipment..

The only problem i see with the belly mower is that is all the tractor is used for..Now you need another tractor! Not a bad idea..

Yes I did see his pictures...very impressive. I plan to do the same thing but will use the machine for a few years before I restore it...my septic system left me with 6 acres of grass and a hole in my wallet. Do you know where he got those tires and wheels?
Also....is there no source for OEM style hoods and fenders that have the Ford logo like the original does?
Thank you in advance Tim!!

Bill,

I would check your local tire place for the turfs, should be pretty easy to get, they aren't cheap though.. might try Miller Tire's website too.

Not sure about the script fenders, but Dennis Carpenter has some nice hoods for N's..p.s. download their catalog, gives a part number for just about every part on these tractors..handy to have.

A nice pair of non loaded worn out traction tires on backwards will also work fine for mowing. Just doesn't look as nice as those oversized puffy turfs.
