If the need arises,,,,how do you jump start a 6 volt positive ground system??? all 6 volts are possitive ground right??? mine is a 40 n. also when putting on a new generator it says to excite the generator.. (to set polarity,?,)
do you just touch the terminal or do you leave it on for a little while, I have to put a new generator on, it came with none when i bought it. thanks.

Pat..... Your questions have been answered many times, you might want to check the "archives" at the top of this great N-Board.

Yes, you can jump a 6 volt positive ground with a 12 volt battery IF you are certain that your tranny is in NEUTRAL. (we don't want any accidents out there) The interesting thing is, your tractor starter really doesn't care wheather it is positive or negative ground. Clamp one of your jumper leads directly to the starter so it doesn't go thru the solinoid. Make sure your igntion switch is on. Now ground your other jumper battery lead onto the tractor frame and watch out, that ol' 6 volt starter is gonna' sing with 12 volts on it. If your tractor is in any sorta good shape it should start in less than 5 seconds. Don't go grinding away for minutes as your starter will puke its guts all over its brushes.

When it comes to "polarizing" a generator, I always have to look it up in the book. I suggest you do the same. And believe it or not, there many books in the library that can tell you how to do it. It isn't just a N-Tractor thing. And the polarizing only takes a second. You deffinately want to be quick about it. Strange that your generator would come with a reminder to "excite" your new generator, but doesn't tell you how to do it.

Oh yeah, Claus has posted many instructions in the archives on how to polarize a generator..... .Dell

THANKS , THE GENERATOR DID NOT INSTRUCT TO "EXCITE",,,, ' THE FORD BOOK THAT SHOWS HOW DOES ,,, BUT DOES NOT SAY FOR HOW LONG THANK YOU. SO WHEN JUMPING DO I PUT THE POSITIVE FROM THE "GOOD" BATTERY TO THE POSITIVE OF THE "DRAINED" BATTERY?? i DO UNDERSTAND THAT BATTERY CHARGER IS BETTER ,, BUT i DONT WANT TO BURN ANYTHING UP IF THE NEED ARISES I ALSO HAVE TO LEARN TO USE THE ARCHIVES BECAUSE I HAVE NOTICED ALL THE QUESTIONS ANY BODY HAS MUST HAVE BEEN TACKLED B4 HAPPY 9N'n

If you're jumping a 6v tractor from something else that is 6v, just go positive to positive and negative to negative.

If you're jumping the 6v tractor from a 12v system, apply the power directly to the starter. This isolates the ignition circuit and battery from the starter. The starter doesn't care about the polarity. Connect one wire to the starter post, connect the other ends of the wires to the 12v system and then connect the remaining wire to the tractor's engine block.

If you do this, !!! MAKE SURE THE TRANSMISSION IS IN NEUTRAL !!!

Regardless of how fast starter spins you still need enough juice in the battery to provide spark to the ignition system. Isn't this correct?

Yes but in most cases, there's enough juice left in the battery to run the ignition system but not enough to crank fast enough to start.

If the battery's completely dead then you've got real trouble.
