I have a 1948 8n tractor, startsup good cold or hot ,when i pull the mower on unlevel ground it starts running rough - slows down - acting as if flooding out. I can push in clutch or disingage the pto and the tractor will run smooth . If i allow the tractor to stall out and die it is very hard to restart ( takes a long time to restart)I have installed new plugs gaped at .025 - new plug wires- the coil was new with new points-condenser-rotar cap - distributor cap - the carburator has been rebuilt. I am not sure what the point gap was set at(does the distributor need to be removed to check points ,distributor is on front) also what is the proper setting for the float and how do you set it. When the tractor sets over night without the fuel valve closed gas will drip out of the carburator air intake .

He's talking about the weights inside the distributor. As the speed of the engine increases, the weights fly outward to change the engine timing. They get crudded up quite often and quit doing their job. Either get a new distributor or take the time to clean out the one you have.

Easy one first..... replace the shut off valve on the sedimet bowl; that is the start of your leak. Replacing the needle valve, seat & float would also be a good idea. Kits are about $30 bucks. On the engine problem.....check the point gap; they often slip. Gap is .015, and removing the distributor is easy. If the point gap is ok, pull the linkage to the carb from the governor w/ the engine running & see if the governor pulls back. If not, you might have a governor problem. I'd check the points first though, because it it a likely solution & easy to do.
