I have installed a 12 v conversion on my 1952 8n, side mount dist. from one of the site suppliers. The kit came with a resistor in order to use the old 6v coil. The kit was easy and seemed to work great, but after an hour of work the coil burned out. I measured voltage out of the resistor to the coil; instead of less than 6v, I read 13v--which would explain the coil. I am now wondering whether to replace with another 6v coil (and replace the resistor which was apparently faulty) or to use a 12v coil. If I use a 12v coil, what sort of resistor will I need?

IC-14-SB $14 IC-14 $30 add the SB to save money. Throw the resistor away. I think this is a standard part # enny were if not they shoud be able to cross reference it.

The resistor will only drop the voltage to 6 Volts when there is current flowing in the primary circuit... points closed, coil primary in OK condition.

If the points are not closed (or not making contact), or the coil primary is burned out, there will be no current flow, and you will read full battery voltage at the coil.

Simply toss the old coil and resistor, and get a REAL 12 Volt coil that specifically states no ballast resistor is needed.
