Couldn't start my 8N today. Just got the ol' click sound at the relay. Cleaned and tightened all connections and charged the battery to no avail. Got out a hammer and tapped on the starter and it started right up. I guess as long as a hammer fixes it, I won't worry too much about it (or should I?).

I'm sure it's ready for a rebuild. I have no idea how old it is or when it was last rebuilt. I guess that's the smart thing. Thanks for the advice.

It may start a 100 times and may only start 1 more time with yer hammer its your call. Starter worn out or bad connection at the starter I think the hammer is tell地 ya sum段n are ya list地.

The problem was likely stuck brushes, or corrosion between the three sections of the starter, or between the drive-end frame and the engine bellhousing.

I would at a minimum carry a hammer. When I had to hit mine last summer every few times I opened it up and decided it needed a rebuild. I think it cost me about $15 in parts including bushings and a soda for the machinist at work to cut the armeture. Took about 2 hours to rebuild including undercutting the mica and getting the old bushing out of the end plate.

Should you worry? Depends on how urgently you need the tractor sometime. Might never happen again. If the problem was something like a brush sticking from dirt, a weak spring, or a worn brush, the problem will show up again, perhaps when you need to use the tractor the most; like there is a foot of snow that needs plowing. Maybe you would be way out in the woods or even stopped awaiting a parade to start. I'd check it out at my convenient time.
