If you look at farm produce prices then and now, there is not that much difference. However, expenses have gone up 10 fold or more.

Fortunately my folks sold their farm in the 1960's and were able to come out with enough to retire on. My dad didn't get to enjoy it much, but my mom, now at age 93, is still living off the proceeds and it's earnings.

It is a disappearing way of life. It was the small farmer that helped get us through the depression. Heaven forbid that we ever see such economic times again.

When I was growing up on a small dairy farm in Delaware County, NY, there were 13 family farms on our mountain -- all milking between 25 and 50 head. Today there are.... NONE.
Farmer down in the valley takes care of our land & uses it for corn and hay when he needs it -- milks about 200 head of Holsteins and needs 5 or 6 of the old farms to support 200 head. Pretty tough way to try and make a living today. Growing up on the farm did teach us the meaning of work, and also a lot about a much higher power than us being in control!!!

Yes the way of the traditional farm is rapidly going away and it is sad. My family has the last 35 acres for sale of the farm my Grandfather founded in 1898. He and his sons cleared 80 acres from pine forest using only horses and mechanical stump pullers. By the early 1900's 80 more acres were cleared. Another 80 acre farm was purchased in the 1930's and the last remaining 35 in the 50's. All this was farmed by horses till the new 9N came on the scene and most of the horses were sold. By the 70's all general farming ceased. The original 160 acres has totally returned to wild woods land, 40 of the 3rd 80 acres are owned and farmed by an Amish family, 40 acres is a subdivision. The last 35 is fallow and for sale. Only the buildings the barn and the farm house on the original homestead give testimony to that it was once a fine productive farm with a fish pond, stream and a 40 acre orchard. The land has went full cycle in 100 years, hate to see it go.

I guess that is why so many of us try to hold onto a small piece of that life, my 6 acres is nothing compared to the land farmed by our relatives, but I will try to keep planting my small vegetable crop and raising my poultry and showing my 4 kids what made this country what it is today.
