Took off my starter and I mishandled it so the drive gear is now stuck in the engaged position. I did read some archives but I did not find any answer to this question: "Can I reinstall my starter with the drive gear in the engaged position, will the NAA engine disengage the starter drive gear once it starts ?

Robert, I did the same thing on my 53 Jubilee project tractor. The drive was in the engauge position and I could not manually retract it by hand.

I went ahead and installed it in the engauged position and it worked fine; no problems at all.

I posted the same question here and someone said you can use a steel wire brush on a grinder to manipulate the drive to get it back to normal but that is not necessary. Just make sure the starter is meshed good to the flywheel drive gear on installation. HTH. Rick H. Ga.

Thanks Rick,

Tried the grinder brush thing and it did not work. I did as you say and everything is fine. I appreciate your help and I wish you all the best for the Holidays.
