I saw the previous post about using a small magnet for removing any metal parts from oil. I like the idea, but checked Ebay and it appears that they are sold in groups of 100. Too many for me. I would like 5 or maybe 10, not 100. Has anyone made such a purchase. If so, I would like to buy 10. If you do email me(drop the numbers 1234 at end of address) give me a price and s/h.
Thanks

Paul D.

J.C. Whitney has them (or at least they once did). Flexible and adhesive backed so that you can simply shape to outside of canister and stick on. Works better on spin-on filters because you simply throw filter and metal particles away at each oil change. With 8N canister type filter you would need to clean particles from inside of canister with each oil change, of course.

Talk to a vet and try to get a couple of cow magnets. I have put them in skid loader chain cases to collect metal filings off of the chains.

If you have an old hard drive sitting around, tear it apart. They have very powerful rare earth magnets in them and the price is right.

Good Luck and N-JOY

oslo,

Here is a link for neodymium rare earth magnets. I purchased some of these for my son to play around with. They are extremely powerful so take heed to the companies warnings around electronics. While somewhat expensive it doesn"t take a very large magnet to do the job.

Safety & blue skies,

DJ

The cat's meow would be samarium cobalt if not for the expense. Back in my servo motor design days I had a few of these around for lab use. Extremely powerful, even in small sizes and dangerous to the neophyte. Easy to get body parts between magnet and steel, i.e., ends of fingers and desk or bench. Such behavior can result in loss of skin with magnet no larger than 10 x 10 mm and (perhaps) 2-3 mm thick.

About 15 years ago I overhauled the TH400 in my 68 GMC truck. When I did I placed one of these magnets inside of the oil pan. To this day, I can hang a half-nine wrench (open or box) or a screwdriver on the outside of the pan.
