I had a 98 Protoge that had a bad belt squeal.I could also see where it had been grinding the belt. The squeal would get worse with the lights on.The belt was tight enough and had very little play. The belt finally came off either broke or ground away.I bought new belts and took the alt. to be checked at Advance. The man said it had a bad diode and it also smoked his belt. The bearing was ok..The alt.light did not ever come on until the belt came off.My question is would a bad diode cause an alt. to be harder to turn or did I get took by Advance for $123..Thanks..... The diode is part of the regulator circuit and has nothing to do with binding. The only thing that will cause binding from inside an alternator is the bearings, unless something got stuck inside the unit that didn't belong there.

DaveH,

Are you forgetting the NINE diodes in the rectifier that convert the 3-phase AC produced byt the stator windings into the DC needed by the vehicle's electrical system?

A shorted diode in the rectifier will make the alternator run hot, and pull harder than normal, but in MOST CASES the idiot light would come on.

I absolutely forgot the rectifier!!! I read that the alternator caused the belt to drag and break and then decided without engaging the brain to right the quick response!!

Yeah, I love those "forget to engage the brain moments"!

I'm STILL smarting from one of those moments I had on another board yesterday!
