A while back I asked about an old thread regarding home made solvent from ATF and Kerosene. I got info that a 1:1 mix was optimal, and picked up a gallon jug of ATF at WalMart for about 5 bucks, stuck it in a bucket and forgot about it until today. I was trying to knock apart my brake shafts and pawls with no luck, so decided to try the new solvent. Dumped the gallon of ATF in the bucket, filled up the now empty jug with kerosene from my parts cleaner and dumped that in the bucket with the ATF. Stirred it around, and dropped the rusted assemblies in the new red solvent and washed up and went out with whats-her-name for Tex-Mex. When we got back, I hauled the parts out and tapped them with my baby ball peen, and they came apart! This stuff has earned a place in my garage. I'm gonna get another gallon of ATF and increase the mix to 4 gallons so I can soak larger parts. I think we have figured out how to make home made Kroil.

Glad it worked for you too. I have used it in the marine industry since the 1960's, best ever and as you say cheap. We used it on rusted nuts and bolts 3" in diameter and it would work in minutes. Just remember that the ATF is tough on hands and eyes, be careful handling the mix.

I got myself a stainless dip basket outta a Berryman 6 gallon rig, works great, even hangs on the bucket rim to drain. I never put my hands in it. ATF container warned of prologed contact to the skin, I'm paying attention.

Thanks,

Been there, done that, liked it. Casa Torrez in Decatur is closer, so we go there by habit. I think Krum might be on the next run, it's been a while...

I think I might go put the engine back on the Old Soldier today. I pulled the rear axles yesterday, so it's time to start over at the front!

ATF has tri-cresyl phosphate in it and it DOES cause long-term central nervous system disorder. It is readily absorbed thru the skin.

Yep, I know not to put my hands in it, thus the dip basket in my rig.
