Check the charging voltage at the battery with a good analog voltmeter. After running a while, somewhat above idle, the voltage should approach 7.4 Volts. If the voltage exceeds this level, the regulator may have been set up for the 8 Volt battery. (Many digital meters get a headache from the electrical noise generated by the ignition and charging systems, and don't read accurately.) Get a new set of QUALITY points and condensor. Be sure the OEM-type ballast resistor is present, and properly connected into the coil primary circuit. Once you have filed a set of points, in most cases, they will never be as good as new, and ANY dirt or oil on the point file or feeler gauge will cause the points to repeatedly fail. Clean your feeler gauge with a squirt of electrical contact cleaner, and wipe dry with a lint-free cloth before using it to set the points. Old-fashioned copper wire core spark plug wires are the best for these old 6-Volt systems. Resistor wires will reduce your spark it the plugs, but it's unlikely that's what's burning your points. If the above does not help, you may have a partially shorted coil the is causing too much primary current to flow through the points.
