I'm about ready to start cranking up the Old Soldier's all new engine. I have already set the valve lash on the engine stand after torquing everything down. Will I need to do it again after the engine is warm and/or broke in? Can it be done with the gas tank in place, or should I use my temp tank from an old lawn mower to break it in?

Ramrod, The FO-19 manual says to set the lash .014-.016. I set mine a tight .014 cold. It seems to be fine with no valve ticking. HTH. Rick H. Ga.

We must think alike, I set mine a tight .015 cold, and I'm hoping for the best.

I have always heard if a valve lash should be adjusted when hot, just take the cold measurement and add 10% to compensate for expansion when hot. This gets it close.

Good luck,
Dan

I've been able to remove the cover without taking the tank off. Remove the 2 nuts, lift and tip cover to the right side of the tractor. Steve NAA III443

I would prefer to re-set the lash after running the engine for at least 1/2 hour. I get the best results doing the adjustment while the engine is running at an idle. This can be done in just a few minutes time especially if they are pre-set, oil splash is minimal. The valve lash adjustment is supposed to be possible with the tank in place but I have never been able to find out how! Can't get the cover on and off.
