I have a 6 volt battery charger. It has a red wire and a black wire. I presume red for positive (hot) and black for negative(ground). How do I hook it up on an 8N with positive ground.

For DC applications.. like car batteries.. you can safely assume red is positive, and black is negative. Try to avoid associating 'HOT' with red/positive, as 'HOT' is in reference to ground.. therefore on a positive ground system... 'HOT' is negative. ( and 'ground' is positive...)

Always.. positive to positive, and negative to negative. No other way to do it without sparks.

It doesn't matter if the tractor is positive or negative ground.....the positive lead of the charger always goes to the positive post of the battery.

I've never checked this out....but is the metalic case of the battery charger at the same potential as the NEG (Black) post or lead of the charger? I've always wanted to check this out...but instead have just insured that the case is isolated or insulated from the body of the positively grounded tractor....otherwise you have a direct connection between the POS (Red) post of the charger and the case when it makes contact with the tractor frame. Its been noted I am some what of a worry wart....but I'd much rather be safe then dodge flying sparks!!

Vallhall..... ....the battery charger "outputs" are INSULATED from the battery charger box. And the RULE IS (+) to (+), wheather it is positive ground or negative ground; and it should be intuitively obvious then its (-) to (-). Traditionally DC (+) is RED, and DC (-) is black..... ....Dell

I have seen a couple of older battery chargers, one of which I own, that have the negative cable internally connected to the metal chassis. This makes a nasty spark, if the charger's metal chassis touches the metal chassis of a positive ground machine.

Therefore, I make it a point NOT to set the charger on the metal chassis of the unit I'm charging, especially if it's positive ground.

I make it a point to set the charger on the floor, or on a wooden stand, just to be safe. Most, if not all modern chargers have the outputs isolated from the case, so there shouldn't be a problem, but I've still stuck with my old habit of keeping the charger off of the unit being charged.
