I am considering purchsing an 8N and would like to know what size DISC & Finish Mower to purchase.

Will the 8N pull out Tree stumps up to 8" in diameter?

The grade of the 4 acre residential property is faily level with a 15 degree decline to one side. The field is currently grass and is well drained.

The field is a bit uneven in areas, can I pull a roller to flatten it out?

stump removal in reply to Robert Berkey, 12-21-2004 13:54:31
I quickly learned that tree stumps, even smaller ones, are easily a match for the 8N. My approach is to leave a longer stump for leverage and then dig out and cut the roots on one side. Then I put a strong chain on the top of the stump, attach it to my loader bucket and pull horizontally or even downward, using the leverage of the longer stump. Usually that's enough to break it free so it can be lifted out. I never try to pull one with the drawbar. The loader hydraulics are much stronger. Work safely, always!!

These tractors weren't designed to pull immovable objects! Stumps are considered Immovable Objects, especially the larger ones! I was trying to pull up a little scrub tree in the picture. Pic was taken by the Filipina Nurse next door, I was just showing off! My foot was On The Clutch! These tractors can kill! But, they are sure FUN!! Merry Christmas!!

I rented a backhoe/loader to dig out the stumps, and used my 8n to haul the brush out with a box mounted on a carryall. I don't think the 8n is the right tool to remove stumps. I tried pulling out a bush with my 4wd truck and ended up digging most of it out by hand.

I must admit, i'm a bit of a rebel. I pull stumps with the 540, BUT....I hae a mini excavator that I use to cut through all the roots, etc...and dig it out with. Without it, i'd never even consider it.....I'm really just dragging a weight...BUT, also, I know I'm taking a serious risk....If you're new to tractors, use the implements, only use the drawbars for towing wagons or trailers. If you hve a lot of stumps to get out, rent a stumpgrinder, or get someone in with a dozer or excavator....then get the tractor out to clean up/grade it with when you're done! Much safer, faster, and still as much fun.

I just struggled with a tree stump. Maybe 8", but probably less. I got nowhere with the 8n and a single bottom plow. Had the neighbor help out with his cub cadet (with a loader). Struggled for a while, chopped most the roots with an axe, and it finally came out. Based on the amount of time and frustration, that will be the last stump I mess with.

A good 8N will handle a 60" cutter in most conditions and a 72" finish mower in finish mowing applications, i.e., not trying to use finish mower as brush cutter. Would not recommend trying to pull 2" stumps, let alone 8" stumps.

Much will depend upon the condition of your 8N. You should have no problems pulling a 5 foot finish mower/5 foot bush-hog/5 foot box blade/5 foot disk/or a 5 foot roller. One of the joys of owning these old tractors is the time spent behind the wheel figuring out just how to use the multitude of implements that can be attached to them. There is real sense of satisfaction of stopping at the end of a day on your N and just looking at all that can be done with these little tractors. Just remember that all tractors are inherently dangerous and operate them accordingly. Have fun!

My N's pull a 6' Caroni finishing mower over 3 acres once a week all summer, a 5' bush hog as needed & a 6' disc. Anything bigger than a 6' disc is going to lift the front end off the ground. Trying to pull stumps w/ an N will either waste your time or kill you. It's a 23 HP tractor. As to leveling a field, the only thing I've every done is disc up a few humps & level it w/ a scraper blade. Took a lot of time & I wasn't very pleased w/ the results. If I had a lot of work to do, I'd rent a piece of equipment rather than try it w/ the N.

I cut 3 acres flat grass with a NAA and a JD261,60" finish mower works good. Craig

Robert, an 8N will not pull an 8" stump. If you try it one of two things will likely happen. Either you'll get hurt or killed or the tractor will get torn up. I have gotten stumps out with a 3000 diesel by putting tension on the stump with the tractor, cut a few roots, more tension, cut more roots and so on. Hard job. Better to rent one of the large stump grinders. A big hydraulic Vermeer goes for about 135-150 per day here in middle Georgia and you can get rid of a lot of stumps in a day with one of those things. Good luck.

I posted a question about pulling stumps a few days ago and got some good advice. Like, "be very careful cause the tractor could flip back ontop of you;" "pull in reverse using the front bumper;" and "don't do it". The stumps I was pulling were from small dogwoods and I dug around them pretty well so it wasn't a problem.

Paul - I would recommend that you never try to do any serious pulling using the front bumper. The front bumper attaches directly to the front axle and the front axle is held on by the king pin. John from Fernadale didn't pull from the bumper/front axle assembly but he did seriously overstress the king pin.

As for a finish mower, 60" or perhaps a 72" finish mower will work ok. As for leveling out ground with a roller--if you have clayey soil then when it is wet it will move around a bit. Of couse flat ground with 12" wide ruts isn't much of an improvement. My best luck at leveling has been kill the grass, work up the soil and disc or rake it out smooth. Then, drumroll please, plant some grass or sod.

Having said that my father had quite a bit of luck in using a big vibratory roller, a Dynapac or Caterpillar, to roll smooth about 3 acres of yard. You may be able to rent one for less than $500 per day plus delivery and pick up at a Cat Rental Store or similar outfit.

Good luck.

Pull out 8" tree stumps? This is a 25hp tractor not a D-10. Very few things can just pull out a stump, the 8N isn't one of them. It will pull a stump out as long as you cut all the roots. As for mowers, a 5' brush hog will work ok.
