I ran compression check on my 2N before starting a full tune up. Readings were 85-85-75-86 (1-2-3-4). I put a drop of oil in #3 and it came up to 90+. I had suspected bad rings because of oil fouling in #3. This just about confirms it. Can I get away with a good tune-up (as described in the archives) for now and wait for the ring job until next winter? I bought tractor about a year ago but have done little with it. It lacks power going up gentle incline under load (or no load if in 3rd gear). I have a couple of swales to cut and about 8 acres to keep clear with a brush hog this summer. My wife says I don't really have the $500 for a rebuild kit right now, but if I can't get my work done ...

I ran mine like this for several years. One plug would foul every 2-3 hours of operation. What I found was that a piston pin keeper had come out and wedged between the piston and the cylinder leaving a serious scrape in the sleeve. It always had enough power. A competent shop did the rebuild for $880. You will not believe the increase in power a good rebuild gives you. I can pull away in 4th towing a trailer without stalling.

If the N has decent oil pressure it sounds like a good candidate for a plug adaptor. These will get the plug out of the oil and extend life between cleanings. Plan on rebuild next winter. fwiw, ray

I had the same thing on my 2n. I bought a plug cleaner from J C Whitney and used it till I tore it down. Good luck

I have a 51' 8N with almost the exact same readings. The book says the minimum readings should be 90 with no greater variation than 15%. I too need a rebuild and don't have the $500. However I have decided that the tractor has enough power to do what I need, so there is really no rush. Keep the plugs clean or new and the oil changed and it will run much stronger. I have one cyl that fouls plugs bad so I give that one special attention, otherwise I develop a slight irregular miss.

I turn a 4 ft hog no problem and plow a lot of snow. I also run a rototiller and use an 18" one bottom plow.

Good luck!

I WOULD START A SECRET STASH OF CASH AND BUY ANOTHER 8N WITHOUT HER SEEING IT. THAN PUT THE "IN NEED OF REBUILD" HIDDEN IN THE GARAGE. THAT WAY YOU WILL HAVE TWO, ONE FOR WORK AND ONE FOR PLAY, BUT DON,T GET CAUGHT WITH TWO OUT OF THE GARAGE. MY .01 WORTH.

I had to buy my wife a convertible in order to get my 2N. I'd hate to think what she would want if she ever caught me with a second tractor.

Hi Ron, Your compression readings aren't all that bad. And, using the tractor with the compression a little low compression won't damage anything. Tuned up and running right it should get you through the summer. Good luck...Al English
