Last weekend, I changed the transmission/hydraulic fluid in my 49 8N. After reading many of the posts concerning what type of fluid to use, I decided to go with the 80/90w. Must have been good timing. I removed the drain plugs on Saturday when it was in the 40's and let the old stuff drain into the pan under the tractor overnight. It got below freezing here in the Ozarks on Sunday but was able to put the new fluid in anyway. When I poured the old stuff in a container, I noticed there was ice in the bottom of the pan due to the large amount of water in the fluid. I could only imagine what that could have done to my hydraulic pump if it had still been in the tractor. Thank you for discussing this in the past!
Before I changed the fluid, the lift was a little slow going up and it only stayed up for 10 minutes before it went down under a load (blade), so I know I have a leak in my hydraulic pump - that's why I went with the heavier fluid. I also put on two new stabilizer bars with the blade. After the fluid change, the lift is still slow (expected due to the heavier fluid), but stayed up for 30 minutes before I let it down for safety reasons. Don't know if the stabilizer bars added to its ability to stay up longer or not. Planning on experimenting with and without the stabilizer bars over the weekend. My Hydraulic Touch Control Lever used to stay in the "up" positon before the fluid change, but now it wants to slide down on its own causing my lift to lower as well. What is causing it and how do I fix the problem? Thanks in advance. I am enjoying this board and have learned a ton of information reading these posts.

Thanks guys, for the information - and the warning.

Here's a link to Zane's hydraulic troubleshooting guide. From your described symptoms, it sounds like you probably have a leaking cylinder, not a pump problem. Much easier to fix. The touch control lever is held in place by friction. There should be a cork pad behind the base of the lever. You may be able to tighten the nut to increase the friction, but you may have to replace the cork. 1/8" gasket material will work or you can get a new pad for under $1. Be careful removing the control arm. Don't pry on it. It's aluminum and will break. Don't ask how I know this. Happy holidays. Steve 8N I69302

To add to Steve's excellent advice - remove ONLY the lever off the shaft, do not try to remove the entire quadrant with a pulley puller. Do not ask how "I" know this!

Good luck,
Dan
