I need some advise. My father-in-law purchased a Ford 8N (which I believe to be a funk conversion).
It has an industrial straight six, with overhead valves. He thinks he bought a lemon because he was told that it does not have a conventional tractor engine. What do I need to specifically look for to know if this is actually a funk conversion or just a hodged podged mess? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated, I think he"s ready to park it on the rock pile. Thanks
Ron.

Just read your post. Might be interested in purchasing if you still have it and want to look at selling it.
Thanks

Merry Christmas! (I'm out in the shop sneaking a drag on my pipe before opening presents)

The Funk conversions did include a few OHV engines during the later years. I think the connections were identical to the flathead 6.

Hate it when you get booted out to sneak a puff. Thanks for the response. The tractor does run, actually Dad just plowed snow. I know he's not happy with it, I just what him to know what he has.
Have a nice holiday
Ron

Well, the OHV version is the more rare, and probably much more valuable, of the Ford N conversions.

These conversions were installed by the dealers at the request of the original purchaser.

I stole my Flathead 6 version, with a sherman hi/lo tranny, at $2800 and was glad to find it.

I'm not sure of the HP of the OHV version, but the flathead 6's had 95HP, or, roughly 3.5 times the HP of a stock 8N. My 66 Mustang had the OHV engine and I think it had 110HP.

I'm no funk expert, but if you do an archive search on the N site, there's 1260 something posts. From the amount of posts I read here, re: wanting more power, I believe your FIL could trade that puppy for any N he wants. Provided it runs. If it were me, and I knew I could get parts for the engine, I'd be plum tickled to keep it. Imagine no more front mount distributor. hehehe
Ron, who's gonna keep looking for them Wisconsin rock piles.

Thanks. I'll be sure to check out that sight. Yes, it does run. And your right with the internet you can find anything for everything. But Dads 76, so if you can't find it in town, than that means you won't be able to find it anywhere.
Have a nice holiday
Ron

I don't know anything about the funk engine so i'm no help there. But as long as it is in running order I would not park it by no means.what ever engine it has will do anything an n tractor was meant to do.. thats my opinion...dave.
