I have a late 40s 8n.I just got it,bought it from a local mechanic.when I initially looked at it,it ran fine, but the idle was high.Got it home and the more I ran it the more it smoked(kind of a blue/white /black smoke)Got vapor locked a couple of times.I decided to monkey with the carb.Seemed like sometimes I could stop the smoke, sometimes not,Changed the plugs to Autolites. No change.I just put a new Carb on because I figured something had to be wrong with the old one(in case you havent guessed I am not a mechanic)Tractor started hard(as usual)Ran no better still smoked.I figured I would get it to the heated garage from the barn and try adjustments there. The warmer the motor got the worse it ran until finally I had to fully choke it to even get 1/2 throttle, and eventually pushed it in the garage with the other 8n(runs great)because it would hardly run at all.A bit of history;the tractor sat for about 3 years, the mechanic I got it from said that the compression was good.Prior to me getting it He did a tuneup and coverted it to 12 volt. What should I check next??Thanks in advance.

I have had similar trouble and just about every time I think it's my carb, it's not!
I learned from Dell and others that the first place to look for ignition or rough running problems is in my front mount distributor. I'd take it off and put new points, etc. or at least adjust what is there to proper specs. It is a hassle to get to but with practice, it gets easier to get it off/on.
Good luck!

When you changed plugs were the old ones sooty or oily? That would be an indication of a running problem.

If there is a great deal of soot (or was) it would help the N run better if you removed the head, cleaned off all the carbon filth and, with a new gasket, replace the head.

Good luck. Definately try the Marvel Oil to get those rings to loosen up.

Take your carb off your good runner! Try it on this one! If it still runs the same, swap dist.! This will help you narrow it down!

Blue/black smoke is indicative of burning oil. if the tractor has been sitting awhile you could have a stuck ring. Put a couple of tablespoons of some sort of solvent (marvel mystery oil e.g.) into each cylinder and let it sit for awhil and see if that dont stop the smoke. Research in the archives how to do a compression test and do one. The front mount distributor can be taken right off the front, leave the rotor cap hooked to the wires and let it hang. Dont worry about timing the distributoe cause it has an offset tang that only goes in one way. when you are reinstalling it make sure to turn it by hand till in engages properly or you will screw it up tightening down the bolts iffn it aint in right...Tim

Newbie,You say you changed plugs and carb. don't stop now,I would go ahead and do complete tune up.Plug wires, distributer cap, points and condenser, new rotor button will do more than you think.. And maybe even new coil.Points gap.015 if front mount remove distributer to change and gap points..

This may sound silly, but if I remove distributor, what about timing? In the back of my mind I wondered if the timing is off already.I am game to try anything ,but I dont want to do more damage than good.Thqanks for the response

Newbie..... ..your squarecan 4-nipple frontmount distributor is driven by an "off-set" cam drive slot scheme, and can be removed and reinstalled without timing worries. You unsnap yer crabcap and letter dangle. Unbolt yer 2-bolts and carry it into the kitchen table to check and set the ignition points 0.015". New ignition points slip and the special #8-32x3/16" screw threads wear and won't hold. New screw $50c (cheap), gittem at yer real Ford automotive parts counter. Iff'n yer points don't hold their gap, yer gonna have poor sparkies and carppy runnin. Also always have a spare set of AutoLite AL-437 sparkies, gap = 0.025..... ....Dell
