Pulled the distributor as per the advice.Will replace points,condenser,cap and rotor.My question is ;how sensitive is the timing setting?The FO4 shop manual says that a 1/4" difference to the hole nearest the timing plate and lock screw.Is this a guideline to get the motor started and an adjustment is needed after according to how the N is running?I am asking this because according this calibration mine is off by at least another 3/16.Is it fairly sensitive?Would that explain it running poorly(sometimes not at all) or did the guy I bought it from have to adjust it to that setting to get it to run at all and mask another problem.When they run there is nothing like them,but when they dont..... ...

I agree with Stickler, it would be critical. Set it at exactly 1/4", correct point gap and "oh yes", the part where it says "points start to open" means actually just starting to open as actually starting to part!

Some set points with a piece of cellophane, so that it just will pull out as the points are starting to open. I never have any around, so I prefer to do it with an analog multimeter set to ohms. Hook the leads one to the distributor body and one to the ungrounded side of the points. When the meter needle just starts to move away from zero, your points are just starting to open.

Good idea. I've always wondered if my bench adjustment was good enough, but when the distributor is mounted on the tractor, there's no refining possible. I assume your approach can be done at the bench(?). Thanks.

Yep, I would think another 3/16 could be at least a couple degrees. If that adjustment is right, and your points gap is right, timing should be bang on.

An additional 3/16" will DEFINITELY be significant. Timing advance is measured in CRANKSHAFT degrees, and since the crankshaft turns twice as fast as the camshaft/distributor, a 2 degree advance at the distributor equals 4 degrees advance for example.

Also, use an Ohmmeter or a battery powered test light to determine when the points actually begin to (electrically) open.

That's the most accurate way, and there's no chance of contaminating the points by sticking something between them.
