I once understood why the diffential slips (?) when one drive wheel spins. Refresh my memory? Why don't N's have what I'd call positraction?

Greenie..... ...lotta modern tractors have a little lever to "LOCK" the differential 'cuz yer stittin right on top of it and its convenient. Conventional field plowing you want about 10% "slippage" between tire and earth, this would wear-out the limited slip clutches in no-time at-all. Farmers wouldn't putt-up with that kinda mal-performance.

The simplistic seperate brake pedal action of your N-Tractor will control "all" the differential slippage due to traction you'll need.

Limited slips in an automobile will gittcha stuck just as fast (sidewize)..... .....Dell

When one wheel spins and the other doesn't the differential does not "slip". The differential side and spider gears divide the power to both wheels equally and when one wheel has less traction that the other that wheel is the one that will spin. The same differentail gears allows one wheel to go faster than the other when turning a corner. Thus the term "differential".

Posi-traction on this small of a tractor would be next to impossible to steer because when turning one of the rear wheels must turn faster than the other and that don't happen with posi which would keep you going in a straight line.

1st they are old. Same reason an H farmall doesn"t have a radio.
2nd you have brakes for each rear wheel allowing you to control power bias.
