Hi,

Am working on an 8-N with burnt exhaust valves.

Head is off, but having trouble removing valve retainer clips.

Don't have the special tool shown in the manual...is it ok to just "pull" them out?

Also, how do the new ones go back in, book shows inserting them with your fingers, but if we're having trouble getting them out (using an o ring puller) We must be missing something simple?

Thanks!

Robert

When I did mine, I did not yet have a valve spring compressor. I turned the engine until the valve was flush with the block, then I took a big screwdriver and inserted it through the exhaust/intake port on the side of the block and pushed the valve guide down. This pushed the retainer clip down enough so I could grab it with a pair of pliers and pull it out. Of course, my guides weren't stuck in the block, so if yours are it may be tougher. I have also had luck using a large screwdriver and prying/pushing up on the bottom of the spring enough to remove the keepers off the valve stems. This will allow the spring to drop and you can get the keeper out then as well.

Of course, you can alway just go get a valve compressor tool from Sears for like $10 or so as well...

Good luck,
Dan

Hi Dan!

Thanks for the quick response.

Pushing down from the port area is perfect, and will be a great way to re install the retainers.

I tried your method, and it worked great...for the one guide that wan't stuck (Murphy's law :)
A bit of "gentle" persuation got the rest out.

I have several spring compressors, and tried them, but until the first valve assembly came out, I wasn't sure how it was all put together.
Seems simple now!

Thanks again!

Robert
