I’m at work and not near the tractor or a shop manual, but I was daydreaming about adjusting the valves on my 49 8N this weekend, weather permitting. What’s the best procedure for cranking the engine tiny amounts to get the valves in the right place for measuring? Can you move it by hand using the fan belt? (distributor disconnected) I don’t have a hand crank and my bumper is not standard and won’t allow me to do that, anyway. I used to have a little button switch I made to gap points on a car probably 30 years ago, but I doubt I have it anymore. I’ll check the FO manual when I get home, but thought I’d ask anyway. What do folks do? Or am I way off base on how one does valve clearances?

Take out sparkies and turn with fan,alot easier and you can back up if you have to...

To try to use the starter to position the valves perfectly enough to adjust lash would be an exercise in futility. Just turn the fan blade, it is much more precise - and the distributor can stay connected. If you leave the head on, remove the spark plugs to keep the compression from making it hard to turn by hand.

I would suggest buying a set of tappet wrenches though - it made the job tremendously easier and well worth the $6 or so I paid for them.

I used the hand crank to turn the engine over when I did my 2N. Worked like a champ. I'd advise blocking your clutch down, though (i did my engine timing while the engine was out, so this is just a suggestion). I agree about the tappet wrenches. Some folks drill a 1/8" hole through the block where the tappets slide up and down and use an ice pick/awl to keep the tappets from turning, but I don't like drilling holes in things like engine blocks and I can afford $6 for a pair of handy wrenches.
