I now have the 8n in a few(alot)pieces in the garage.Timing was off,so that makes me feel better,as when I get it back together I know that there is a chance of it actually running.Pulled the manifold to make sure that the previous owner(mechanic??) had installed the manifold gaskets.Discovered the two middle studs are stripped. Not all the way but not a good situation. Is it better for me to try to remove these two studs or rethread them if there is enough room.I am a Novice so both ways are not apealling. What is the lesser of the two evils? Thanks

You could look at cutting new (smaller threads) onto studs. They can be a b&%#@ to get our. You may very well snap one and then have to drill it out. Good luck.

If it was my tractor.....I'd remove all of them & replace them w/ new ones. If you do that, remember that the studs go into the water jacket, so drain the block or you're going to get wet! And, replace the bolts w/ the correct brass bolts, coat the studs real good w/ never sieze & you won't have any problems getting the manifold off again. And, opinions on putting sealer on the studs going in the block are 50/50; I do not use any sealer but some folks do.Your call. Oh yea.....buy a stud extractor. If you break it off, you are in for a real learning experience.

One correction on the otherwise excellent advise:

The bolts (studs) are not brass. The studs are steel and need to be. The NUTS are brass - that way the nuts strip before the stud threads do (like you are experiencing now). You want this stud to be steel when you are trying to remove it 20 years from now!

Good luck,
Dan

replace the studs by all means. They are cheap and the right fix. Drain your radiator if you haven't yet, as these studs go through to the water jacket. Use a stud extractor (preferreble) or get two steel nuts and snug them together tightly (if you have enough threads) to remove this stud. Apply slow steady pressure to these studs, they are know to snap off quite frequently - which would compound you problems. When you replace the stud, put anti-seize on the threads and use BRASS nuts.

Good luck,
Dan

Hmmmmm..... .same advice from two different guys. I know that if two lawyers give you the same advice, you've wasted your money. Wonder if that rule applies to tractor advice.....
