NAA Distributor Cap Orientation

When I tore my engine down on the NAA, I marked the distributor cap with the cylinder numbers. Now that it's back together, my new distributor cap has a '1' on the spot next to where I marked my number 1. My number 1 was in the 1 o'clock position, the new number 1 is in the 11 o'clock position, just ahead of it in the CCW rotation.

Which is right?

My son builds high performance racing engines. He has told me several times that it doesn't really matter where the # 1 position on the distributor cap is located as long as it is timed to the # 1 cylinder.

When I timed my Jubilee project tractor engine I positioned the # 1 nipple on the distributor cap at about 11 o-clock and the oiler tube was at about 5 o-clock. Otherwise, I followed Dan's instructions.

Ramrod - It sounds to me that your distributor is now in a different positon, and that you didn't put your distributor back in the same position it was when you took it off. However what Dan is saying is correct in determining position rotor should be pointing when compression stroke is felt, but..... ..... the NAA distributor rotation is CW where as the N is CCW. Make sure your #2 wire is clockwise from your #1 wire.

That could well be, the oil pump was replaced, and therein lies the rub. The key slot could be different. I marked the point where the dots line up on the front cam and crank gears, wouldn't that be TDC (compression stroke)on #1?

Remove your #1 plug, put your finger over the hole, and turn the engine until you feel the compression stroke. Now, look at your rotor. The nipple it is pointing to is where you put your #1 spark plug wire, then go 2,4,3 in a ccw rotation - regardless of what it says on your cap.

HTH,
Dan
