Three problems (that I know of)...trying to get 8N (front mount dist) back to running after an engine rebuild...

1) Starter will turn engine over, but cannot get engine to turn if pulling tractor and release clutch....if sitting still in 4th, cannot "rock" and get engine to turn....

2) No gas going through carb when remove bottom drain nut, plenty of gas coming through line if discontect where it goes into carb....

3) No spark at plugs...I've been looking on this forum for a step by step way to trace the problem...haven't found it yet but will keep looking...

Thanks in advance

Are you sure the starter turns the engine over? Look for the fan balde mooving.

As for spark, check to see that the points are opening and closing. easy to do with either distribuitor type.

Well, for the gas, it sounds like a plugged elbow where the line goes into the carb. Either that or the float needle is stuck. HINT: try tapping the side of the carb with a 2x4 and seeing if that helps. If so, it's probably the float needle indicating you could use a carb rebuild.

As for the engine, has it been rebuilt lately? If so, i've known several newly rebuilt engines to not pull start just from being so tight. I jumped 12V to mine right after the rebuilt to get it to turn over. If that's not it, you are trying to pull start it in 4th gear, right? 1st gear won't do it. If that's not it, does the tractor act like it's in two gears at once? That would also kill the engine unless the clutch was blocked down.

Hope this gives you some places to start. Keep us posted!

Jeb

Thanks to Ken, souNdguy and Jeb for the replies. They are helpful, and should be things I can do without screwing stuff up...to Jeb specifically...yes, the engine has been rebuilt...and the guy I am working on with this is of the opinion that it won't pull-start because it is too tight...a trac mech I told about the problem was skeptical of this, so I became a little cautious about trying to force it...on the other hand, the starter definitively turns it over (souNdguy, the fan turns)...so if I can get the gas and spark solved I will proceed, unless some one is of the opinion that the engine is so "tight" that it might do damage to run it...

Thanks...I won't be able to work on it until next week-end, so this thread will go way down the list, but I will reply anyhow...hoping for luck, Rusty.
