I"ve got a 1952 8N that I had fully restored 4 years ago. I"m rather new at this. 8N was my father"s, he used it for 40 years farming 250 acres - its like a family heirloom. But it won"t start! I didn"t drive it much last summer, Now when I try to start, it turns over good but gas runs from bottom of carb (where aircleaner hose connects) I thought it was just flooding but plugs are dry. Then I thought the float might be stuck and opened carb up, drained it, flipped float up and down, resealed and tried again. Same problem. I"d appreciate help from anyone.
Help from anyone -

Take the float out and shake it to see if it has any fluid in it ..I have had this problem before..

Thank you all for the good info. I'm learning a lot. I did try shooting starter fluid in carb - no results. Checked plugs, still dry. It started to rain here in KC and tractor is outside so I had to quit. I was about to start on a carb clean up and several of you had good points on what to look for , float, needles, etc. Do any of you know of any good online pictures of a 8N carb taken apart that would show me what each of these parts are and tricks and tips for getting it all back together and diagrams for some of these electrical jumps to test spark. My I&T Shop Service manual doesn't show any of it. thanks

You asked for a carb overhaul site and the link below will hook you up with one of the best. On the other hand, if it won't fire on ether your problem most likely isn't fuel.

Your mileage may vary

Since you are new at this, make sure it's the float in conjunction with the float valve that controls the gas flow. Make sure the valve is dropping down when the float does. Sounds like you may have 2 problems though...try jumping ignition switch in case it's gone bad. If you go one step further, and jump from battery to coil, I understand that it will give you slightly hotter spark due to skipping the resistance of the in between connections etc.
If that helps, keep narrowing it down, check all connections, etc.

Pat,I don't think it has been mentioned here but it seems many are having trouble with the "new" type needle valve.Rubber tip I think and sometimes it doesn't fully seat thus causing fuel to "flow".I've had this problem also.

I'd also add to check your spark by pulling any plug wire. If it sat nearly a year.. the points may have closed up or coroded.

Check the main jet. It is in the bottom half and can be removed once the main nozzel is removed. Careful because it is brass. Spent nearly five hrs trying to get an 8N started to find that pinhole sized passage was clogged. Fired right up afterwards.

Signs of a stuck float is fuel running out the carb. You should take her apart and "really" clean everything up. Reset float level, make sure seats are squeeky clean. Use copper wire to clean all orifices and jets to make sure everything is open. The only way you will get excess fuel running out the carb. is if the float isn't shutting the fuel flow off. I have found its better to be a little shy of float level then to have it set to high.

Patrick..... ..what Tymoc sez..... and..... ..
Check yer float for leaks. Sometime you can hear fuel slosh when you shake it, but its more better to stick yer float in clear glass jar fulla of HOT WATER and watch for tiny stream of air bubbles..... ...Dell

First rule in N series starting problems - spray some starting fluid in the carb - if it starts it is fuel related, if not it is ignition related. This is the first, and best, troubleshooting on these tractors.

Good luck,
Dan

Thanks, Dan, I'll try it in the morning. What are the signs of a stuck float - maybe I was going down the wrong trail all this time.

Your problem is the same problem i had, my 8n would crank all day, but only start with carb spray, i took it apart and soaked all parts in carb cleaner over night, then cleared all pasages with compressed air. after assembly, it took a while to get tractor started, constant cranking with choke out the whole time, eventully i got her goin ran about 20 min. now it starts right up, you may not have to crank like that, but if she doesnt go right away keep trying, you will get there.e
