I recently removed the head from 8N and found the exhaust valves totally black, stuck, and 1 was brown. Also 1 spark plug tip was brown,1 was oily. What is cause of such carbon build up?I had to take head off as i had oil in radiator from blown gasket.

In the era of that tractor, with flathead engines in cars and trucks, it was not uncommon to have to take the head off the clean out the carbon, and having to do a "valve job" was not uncommon, either!

Of course, piston, cylinder wall, and piston ring wear allowing oil "pumping" adds to it, as does keeping these tractors for "hobby" use, and not working them hard everyday as they were used in their prime, which warms them up and helps burn of some of the deposits.
