I'm thinking about powder coating my 8N engine, head and manifold. Anyone have experience with this? Will the heat from the head or manifold cause the powder coat to peel off? Thanks for all advice. -JohnJ

John
I work in powder coating. Unfortunately my facility is unable to do high temp. Our powders will stand up to 475 degress. But here's some helpful hints in your search. 1. Every powder manufacturer out there makes a high temp powder. 2. It's all about pretreat (cleaning before powder coating). The basic cleaning steps are 1. alkaline cleaner, 2. rinse, 3. iron phosphate, 4.rinse. 99% of the companies I know use an iron phosphate, what is needed for high temps is a zinc phosphate used during the cleaning stage. It's not popular because it's a DNR nightmare. The iron phosphate starts to break down around the 475 degree mark. However, I am working on a high temp project. The material is sand blasted and the powder has a shelf life about 2 weeks. Before Christmas I had made 6 attempts and all my samples have failed. The powder manufacturer is telling me yes yes yes and my samples are peeling peeling peeling. Even if I get it to work, sand blasting your manifold I'm sure is not an option.
Hope this helps.
D

Powder coating on an engine will work just fine but it ain't necessary. Paint will hold up well. Hi-Temp powder coatings worked on manifolds till the EPA mandated re-formulation for environmental reasons. There is likely not any powder coaters that will gurantee that their present Hi-Temp powder coating at over 800 degrees which is way short of what manifold needs. Folks here in town just told me flat no when I wanted to try the 800 degree stuff and guaranteed it would most likely burn off and for sure at least blister.

Bob,
The Jet-Coat link says to send your parts to them!!! I don"t think I have that many stamps. One site I checked said, "high temp," but I checked the picture of the can and it said, Up to 250 degrees F." Here"s another link.

Yer rite! Probably one of them ebayer"s who says 1000 degress in HIS description and when it peels off at 251, he"ll say "buyer didn"t use product according to directions."

Russ,

Have you ever done any of the regular powder coating? The kid wants to get an Eastwood kit, and do some rims for a 4X4. I was wondering how difficult it is, and how you would get them clean enough.

I have seen a number of reviews on the Jet-Coat stuff for headers and manifolds and such in several of the hot-rod-mags, and they seem to think it holds up.

Bob,
None, zero, zip. The "paint and bodywork board" has several guys who are very knowledgable and don"t mind sharing the knowledge. I was quite impressed that they answered questions so completely; pros and cons; top, middle or bottom shelf quality; hardeners; clear coats; etc. See what you think of the board and if you want to pick their brains. There is a hi temp powder coat, but the guys I talked to didn't want to guarantee it would stay on a manifold.
