Hi all, last week I was asking about a 12 convertion for my 8n to help with cold weather starting, I got lots of input on the subject , it seems the way for me to go is convert to 12 volt. The guy that did the work for me said everything Dell said about clean, tight and bright, he also said to use the bigger cables with 6 volt which I had, but he also added something interesting that 12 volt is much more forgiveing when it comes to clean bright and tight, said you can have alot of sins with a 12 volt system and get away with it where a 6 volt system has to be in "Perfect" working condition or you'll have nothing but problems- Interesting. Also by converting to 12 volt I will not have to use my lower raditor hose heater and won't have to buy heaters for the battery and the block which will save bunchs of money and I'll never have to take the battery in the house or shop to keep it warm.

All in all, it seems there is alot less labor and exspense with a 12 volt system.

Thanks for all the input.
Mel

I just did a conversion from 24 volts to 12 volts on my M37 Truck. Starts great now like it did befor but I can find parts easier for it now. I just used a Ford Alternator with Electronic Voltage Regulator and bolted it in along with putting a 6 volt starter in. I got the Alternator and voltage Regulator for free and also removed the short harness between them so the hook up was easy. Now I don"t have to buy 35.00 head lights anymore plus it uses a regular coil now. Mark H.

Mel..... .....I'm pleased you've made an "informed decision" to convert your 6v N-Tractor to 12v. If I offended you with my comments, I was just trying to help you make that decision for the right reason..... ....respectfully, Dell a 12 volt advocate for the right reason

Well, don't worry about it, you did offended you with your comment about mindreading, didn't need to hear that. Your info was good and was the main reason for coverting to 12 volt.
Thanks
Mel

YOU WILL APPRECIATE THE 12V. DOUBLING THE VOLTAGE IS A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE AND THAT IS WHY THE WHOLE WORLD CHANGED TO 12V A LONG TIME AGO. THE 6V DIE HARDS ARE SOMETHING ELSE. MY OPINION IS THAT IT IS A DISSERVICE TO THE N OWNERS TO DISCOURAGE A SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT TO THE N TRACTORS. YOU CAN STILL HAVE BATTERY CONTACT PROBLEMS WITH 12V BUT NOTHING LIKE YOU HAVE WITH 6 VOLTS. MY N HAS HAD 12V AND ELECTRONIC IGNITION FOR SOME TIME. TWO GREAT IMPROVEMENTS FOR THESE OLD N'S. YOU SHOULD OBSERVE YOUR CHARGING INITIALLY TO SEE THAT IT IS CHARGING AND NOT CHARGING TOO MUCH. WITH THE SOLID STATE REGULATOR YOU SHOULD SEE NO PROBLEMS. GOOD LUCK

If I'm the 'diehard' you're referring to, just to let you know, I'm only 32, grew up dealing with nothing but 12 volt on cars, trucks etc. All I'm trying to say is that a lot of these conversions get done for the WRONG reason. Often they are hiding the fact that there is an electrical problem or a tired engine.

I think that is the point I was trying to make that with a 12 volt system it will be much, much more forgiveing with electrical problems or with a tired engine.

Thanks for your input

Well, my '59 540 is sitting outside year round...(unfortunately). It's 6V, never plugged in, and starts year round. I live in Ontario, not like it's warm year round. The only time I had starting issues was right before the engine needed rebuilding. In the 16 years I've had it, I've only replaced the battery once. (Would have to check, but, I think the current battery is 6 or 7 years old.) I will admit, my tractor does get used almost every day, but, it gets more of the typical farm maintenance, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.(other than oil changes, i try to keep them regular)

Keeping your tractor plugged in does more than assist starting, it helps to warm the engine, getting the oil moving faster, and reduce startup damage. I used to have a magnetic heater on the tranny housing, til I finally seemed to get rid of all the water contaminated oil.

I'm a firm believer that there really is no need or reason to convert to 12V, other than personal preference. Most of the ones I've dealt with were more headache than anything, because for a long time, every one was done differently. At least now adays, there seems to be some consistency with the conversions.

Mark

My '49 is original 6v and sits outside in upstate NY uncovered 365/24/7 I run it probably 4 days out of a week year round and have never had a starting problem that is attributable to 6v. If my generator or the spare that came with it ever go bad I will compare the cost of a conversion to the cost of rebuild and decide then. If it was a side mount the change would most definatly be made along with electronic ignition, but with the costs involved it will probably stay just as it is.

My 8n and new 660 are 6v.. and start eailly. Just as easilly as my 12v NAA and 12v 2n.

Like the others say.. there are right reasons to convert to 12v.. but if those reasons don't apply.. the 6v system can work fine.
