My early(July)"47 8N has the clevis mounting holes underneath. Since they changed over to 8N production in June of "47 it makes me wonder if the new castings maybe overlapped a little into the late 2N"s. I wonder if anybody knows for sure?

By the way, I"ve seen Dearborn literature somewhere showing a picture of a large "horseshoe" shaped drawbar attached to the lower links on an N. It had multiple holes like the straight fixed drawbar. That was likely the type used on the 9N/2N.

Jeff, how early is your 8N? I have 8N1045 and it has the mounting holes in the diff. housing for the drawbar clevis. It would have been easy to modify the mold patterns to provide the bosses needed to mount the clevis, so I suspect that was a feature "new" to the 8N's and thus included on all of them.

Regards,
Larry

Larry:

I have 8N 4778. I think you"re right, all the 8N"s had the new castings. I can"t help but think w/ all the changes made in the turn-over from 2N to 8N some of the tractors were "hybrids". Some old 2N parts & some new 8N parts. Can"t imagine Henry II stopping production to make the change, but who knows?

Jeff

My '48 has the 4 holes under the diffy. I bought mine right here. Did have a problem with the holes on the new clevis not lining up. The folks here sent another one right out.

It is a lot easier to deal with than the original.

Thanks Brian. I was wondering of those would maybe not line up just right but it is no big deal easily corrected. I am going to for sure get one of those hitches for mine. I will get the serial number as soon as I get it to the farm. The steering has ALOT of slack and it is in the steering gear I noticed.

the 8ns originally have a clevis under the pto, not the drawbar hanger that mounts directly around the pto shaft. Then there was a rollerdrawbar that connects to the clevis and to a crossbar on the liftarms, with staybars from the toplink on the tractor.dearborn made these drawbars. If your not doing a restoration the later style or aftermarket drawbars are a lot more conveinant to use, they retail for around a $100.00

Thanks for the info. I do like things original and for the most part this tractor will remain original. I really want that new style one for $100 I was wondering if the first 8ns also had the mounting holes for this down underneath. I discovered the 9n and 2n do not and it made me wonder if the first 8ns are that way also.

Wyler..... ....as far as I know, ALL 8N diffys have the 4-bolt cast-in mounting boss underneath the diffy for mounting the swinging draw. You are correct the 2N/9N does NOT have the mounting boss..... ...Dell

Thanks for the info Dell. I am sure it does then. If it doesn't happen to have it and I am sure it does I can always set it up like the 9n and 2n. I wonder why they didn't make the 9n and 2n to take that type of drawbar as well it looks like neat setup and about as safe as a drawbar can get on a tractor of that design. I know the lower the better and also the center of pull is farther forward than the very rearward mounted types.

My '47 8N (sn 34055) built in the late fall/early winter of 1947 has what looks to be stock clevis from the factory. I have never had the swinging drawbar as I would like to get a real one and never blew the $100 on the whole aftermarket kit just for the bar & pin.
