First, thanks for all the input on my ring question. I think I can hold off untill spring and do the complete job. Intalled another new set of plugs and backed the timing off about a degree. Starts a little easier and not so much smoke. Now for the next stupid question. My air cleaner and tube is a pittyfull sight and I was wondering if these tractors can run on a regular dry type air filter and if they can would that help the engine breath a little better?

Bob, Here is my K&N air filter, may be blasphemy to many to do this, but hey, it is my tractor. I got tired of the old oil bath, which by the way is a superior air purifier. I still have the oil bath in case I ever want to do a restore/retire project. Right now though, too much work for the old 8N. Philip.

I have seen K&N filters on pullin' tractors where the tiny filter was mounted directly on the carb.

Don't think it would be very effective for mowing or plowing cause the dust would get in or plug it up real soon

Actually, the oil bath air cleaner is really a pretty efficient air cleaning system for microscopic dust like one encounters in a field. It will trap particles way too small to see....the kind that actually get into the pores of the metal and cause premature wear in your engine. But they do need to be cleaned on a regular basis based upon the amount of use and environment they are being used in. Don't be afraid of it...take it off the tractor and dissect it....once you see how simple...yet amazing effective it is....you'll have a whole lot better undestanding about how it works and how to keep it clean. Just watch those sheet metal edges....mine are sharp like razor blades!! My biggest frustration is the bent metal pipe that connects the air cleaner to the carb....one of these days I am going to figure out a way to completely clear that darn exhaust pipe and manifold clamp!! Good luck!!

Bob,
Supposedly, yes. But that"s from the folks selling the filter. These folks can recommend a filter size. You gotta figure out how you would mount it.

I dont know how or if you could rig a dry air cleaner up but I was able to get my air cleaner apart and unrolled both of those steel wool like filters and got them completly clean and rolled them back up and back together again.
