Playin with idle jets, for the infamous idle SPUTT

I have got my 8N runnin' better than ever now.....all except that dang low idle sputter.
Bills "runnin lean" post got me thinking (rare feat!).

These M/S carbs with the air idle jet seem to allways tend to have plenty of idle air mix available since they all seem to idle best with the idle needle almost all the way in (less air in mix). The needle does not seat in the idle jet(orifice)but in the air passage.

Since I am a venerate PACK RAT I have several "old" idle jets from past carb rebuilds.

I am experimenting with numbered drills & opening old idle jets to see if I can get the poppin' "sputter" to minimize. On my 8N it can get better with a slight choking, but I know my passages are clear cause I ran guitar strings thru all of them after soaking & compressed air does go thru them very well.

Since this is something that can be tryed and put back correct, it seems like a 'fun" thing to play with. Their certainally is lot's of air mixture available on my tractors!!!

Anybody else try this/think it is worth trying or will I just hear how stupid it is???

I've given up on trying to get rid of the sputter. Both of my N's run fine with any load and all conditions, I've resigned myself to live with it. Most old tractor guys I've met say they never saw an N that didn't sputter at idle.

rasputen,
Then ya gotta run er back and forth tween Climax, Colorado (11360 feet elevation) and Badwater Basin in Death Valley (282 feet below sea level) and see what difference THAT makes.

Dear, STUPID
I have one that’s drove me ta drink'n you have made a good guess as were I have went with it. I have not got around to install'n it on a tractor cents i played with the idle jet set up. Yes it would spit and stall the tractor and i know its in the carb cuzz I do have a spare that’s as sweet a run'n carb as you will find. Matter a fact I have two known good carbs (NOT FER SALE SO DON’T ASK) Idle circuit does become a big player from idle to about 1/3 throttle till the main jet kin take over then idle circuit, kin not function enny more cuz it needs the restriction of the throttle plate to draw fuel

Yep, I understand that part. As a matter of fact my intermediate jet (TSX 33)cleans up the sputter real good & my main runs perfect with zero issues.

Just wanted to tinker a bit & see if I could clear up the 400 rpm area a bit. It really matters very little in the scheme of utilization, just a picker of nits & can always spend hours doing something of little value while my work is being put off.
