My 8N has always started really well and easily (original 6 volt system) - and has run fantastic. Now it'll fire up and sound good (3/4 choke) for about 10 to 15 seconds and then just completely die - no sputtering or anything - just quits. The only difference that I can think of is that now its cold outside... (0 to +25)
Added fresh gas and de-icer, keeping oil heater plugged in... but always the same results...
Cleaned out the gas bowl - no water & all looks ok.
I'm at a standstill... not knowing where to proceed or what to check next... Any suggestions? Ideas? thanks...

Re: Yep - filters... in reply to R Peterson, 01-05-2005 09:24:19
Great info - thanks! I hung a little gas tank & line directly into the carb - and it didn't die anymore... so onward to the filters I guess.

Sure wish it would have done this crap when it was warm out... gas all over your hands at 5 degrees above zero sucks! Thanks for the help,
Randee

My guess is a plugged float valve or sticky needle not letting enough gas in the bowl. The tractor starts.. then the bowl goes dry and the tractor starves. Could even be a 'heavy' float.

Try starting the tractor with the air hose off, and when it goes to die, give it a minor whiff of ether. If you can keep it running like this.. there is a good chance it is fuel. If it were spark I would think after starting it a few times and letting it die that it would eventually just not start for a while.. ( if it was a warm switch or resistor problem ).

I had the same problem and like crazy 8, it was a plugged filter. Remember there are three filters. On mine it was the one at the top of the sediment bowl. But, that means that the one above the shutoff valve is probably needing to be cleaned also - just THAT on is an UGLY job because you have to drian the tank to get to it. AND since it is plugged you cannot get the last gallon of gas out!!

I also had one valve assembly where the hole for the last gallon of gas was plugged SOLID! I had to pick it out with a scratch awl. So if you drop the valve out of the tank, check that hole also to be sure it is open.

Regards,
Larry

I had a similar problem. It ended up being a blockage on the top side of the bowl housing. I had to pull the whole assembly from the tank and clean the port.Make sure you have real good flow to the carb.

Might be a switch going bad and or the resistor. If you can hot wire it and see what happens, if it runs good that way its something back from the coil if not then it could even be the condenser or coil. just a guess but might help get you in the ball park
