I am new to the list so I thought I would share one of my experiences. I got my 8n earlier this year and have had a lot of fun with it. I have a 6 foot finish mower, 5 foot brush mower (bushhog) and a 5 foot blade for snow removal.

Earlier this year I was had to buy an over-running clutch for the bush-hog and mower. I wasted a lot of trips and a little money.

All of my mistakes were due to Farm & Fleet; a store I love, but do not buy PTO clutches there. The first overrunning clutch I bought was the standard 1 5/8 on both ends and i used an adapter that I bought there. With the adapter the clutch stuck out too far, but that was short-lived as I mangled the adapter while bushhogging, which destoyed the clutch.

F&F was good about replacing the clutch, so this time I picked up the size (1 3/8 female) that needed no adapter. I noticed that it was made in India, always a bad sign for quality, but I am a cheapass somtimes and this part was under $40. I commenced with my bush-hogging and blew the OR clutch apart. I never found all the pieces but F&F replaced this one too.

Third OR clutch (and another trip to Baraboo); I started brush cutting again and it came apart too. This time I found all the pieces. It came apart so many times that I could put it back together with my eyes closed. I finally got fed up with that and went to the local implement store in Lavalle, WI and bought a heavy duty one and it worked fine the remainder of the summer. I scoffed at the $60 price but I wish that I had bought the quality one the first time because in the end I saved nothing.

I bought one of the "cheap" kind ($35 @ Boomgars) two years ago. It has is gold and stamped "India".
Haven't had any trouble with it so far. Hope it stays that way!

What happens is that the internal tolerances are so great and there is so much slop in the OR clutch that the retainer clip would pop off under load. After replacing the c-clip several times I gave up. I am glad that you are having better luck than I did though.

Best,
Paul

Your story might illustrate why FF went out of business ,too friendly about replacing parts and management's decisions to buy and stock the shelves with cheap china junk.

I dont know where you are, but Farm & Fleet is still in business, at least in WI, IL & IA. I was just in the Baraboo, WI last week and not so long ago in Janesville, WI store. Their website is still up too. I do agree that they have too much junk from China and India, but so do a lot of stores these days.

Best,
Paul

Sorry if I posted incorrect information regarding Farm & Fleet. I live in Michigan and our store closed and we were told that Tractor supply had bought them all. Tractor Supply Co. opened up where Farm & Fleet had been, bought most of their stock too. In my little part of the world Farm & Fleet is gone and Tractor supply company is even worse on parts and technical help from stock folks.

Fessman,

I do believe that was the case; the Indian one was shiny gold and the good one was black oxide. I am not near the tractor now but Hub City does ring a bell.

I had two of F&F Indian import ORCs blow up too.

First one was a 1 1/8 female to 1 3/8 male, second one was 1 3/8 female to 1 3/8 male with a 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 spline sleeve. Second one jammed when it blew, sheared the drift pin, stripped the sleeve and mucked up my PTO shaft. The local F&F wouldn't refund anything on the second one. They thought I was over-stressing the ORC by raising the cutter with the PTO running. Hard not to do that on a stock 8N.

I ended up at the NH dealer, got a new 1 3/8 PTO shaft and paid the extra 20 bucks for an ORC that has performed flawlessly since then.

Sorry to hear about your experiences. Too bad you didn't find this sub first. It is well known that the small sheet meatal bushings that size-up your OEM 1 1/8 pto to the standard 1 3/8 pto are low torque only. Ther eis a 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 stub extender that is a tad better, and a halfway decent compromise though. Or, as you discovered.. there is a native 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 ORC. Both the pin on, and the quick release kind.. which usually consist of thumb button or slip collar design. In any case.. all of these must be greased before use..

I have had good luck with SPEECO products.. not sure what farm & fleet uses. I currently have a 5' cutter on my NAA and have the speeco ORC and a stub adapter. Works great.
