My '49 8n starts and idles (high and low) just fine. Under a load, and after about 5 to 10 minutes, it begins to sputter, run on one to three cylinders, and backfire for about two minutes, then stalls out. I have to leave it alone for an hour or so, and it will start up (although a little hard--may need a shot of starting fluid) and the above cycle will start over again.
After one of these episodes, I pulled number one spark plug, and it looked wet and oily, and would not spark, but did after I cleaned and dried it. Pulled number two plug, and it was as white and dry as could be. (??)
Opened the drain plug under the carb and let it flow freely for a few minutes, thinking it was water in the fuel. Checked the distributor (front mount) for moisture,(as I was plowing wet snow, thinking moisture entered that area) but it looked clean and dry. I ran it for another 10 minutes--same thing all over. Replaced points, condenser and plugs last summer, and it probably has three or four hours on it since.
What do you guys think?

my MF135 did exactly the same thing shortly after I changed the points

cleaned everything up super real good when I put the new points in but didn"t put a dab of grease on points rubbing block, rubbing block then wore down and points gap went away

Paul..... ...yer sufferin' from low sparkies. There are 4 common run-time issues with the squarecan frontmount distributor.

1) runs for about 1 minute and quits; restarts after about 1 hr; BAD condensor NOT your stated problem
2) runs for about 5 minutes and quits; restarts after about 1 hr; clogged fuel filters
NOT your stated problem
3) runs for about 1 hr and quits; restarts the next day; BAD ignition coil
Not your stated problem
4) runs for about 15 min and quits; restarts after about 1 hr; BAD ignition switch Sound like your problem? You doubt? make a jumper wire with alligator clippies and next time it quits; jumper the ignition switch wiring at the "T-shaped" terminal board under your ammeter. Unfortunately, the N-Switch is not as robust as we'd like'm to be..... .....Dell, self-appointed sparkie-meister

That explains why, when I purchased the tractor, the previous owner, a respectable elderly farmer, had drilled two 1/8th inch holes on the dash and mounted a standard 110 volt ac current light switch on it for the "igition switch".
Might better have left well enough alone when I replaced it with an original switch.
THem ole farmers knew what they were doin'!
Thanks for your help.

Your coil maybe going south on you. My 801 did the same thing years ago and after puttin a coil from an old chev car on it, it has purred like a kitten since. But of course you can't do that because of the front mount but it still maybe the coil.
