I HAVE A 8N THAT DOES SHOW ANY CHARGE ON THE AMMETER. HOW DO I TEST IF IT IS THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR OR THE GENERATOR?

Pete..... ....ennytime you disconnect your battery, for whatever reason, it NEVER HURTS to re-polarize your genny/voltage regulator.

Just simply arc-spark the BATT and ARM terminals on your squarecan voltage regulator underneath the oil pressure gauge. The BATT & ARM terminals have BIG #12ga yellow wires connected to them. Ignore the 2-tiny black wires. Simple, eh?

Now iff'n yer ammeter still continues to read (-) discharge, you may have shorted something. Infact you may have burned out your voltage regulator. I wasn't there, so I don't know what you might have done and not told us, I flunked mindreading, just ask my ex-wife..... .....respectfully, Dell

Assuming you didn't re-wire anything.. I'd guess you put the battery in backwards.. Next guess is the battery was reverse polarity on the shelf ( extremely rare possibility ).

Verify that you have the positive terminal grounded, and the negative terminal to the starter solenoid, as these tractors are/were positive ground.

Luckilly, it looks like your genny and regulator may have 'figured' it out, and simply reversed polarity and due to the nature of electricity.. it shows a backwards deflection on your ammeter as current is flowing the opposite direction it used to be.

Now if there were smoking wires associated with this negative deflection.. I'd guess that you may need a new regulator.. if however it is otherwise 'normal' acting, I'd swap the battery back to OEM polarity, and then I'd polaraze the regulator by jumpering the battery tab to the armature tab at the regulator. If you can't get to the regulator easilly.. simply jumper the negative battery terminal to the armature on the genny.. it will do the same thing.
