Old Warrior Fires Now, but...

Genesee sent me a replacement module, no questions asked, installed it, and got fire now for the NAA. The thing is, Old Warrior is quick to flood. After only a few tries to start, I see gas trickling out the carb. Does this mean a carb rebuild is in my future? I am resisting this, never had much luck rebuilding a carb.

I would say you have some excellent compression and are really causing a lot of suction on the intake stroke. If it doesn't pop in two or three spins, I would wait - or try starter fluid. I have rebuilt probably 20 carbs in the last few years (fixed them up to sell) and I must say that 90% of the freshly rebuilt carbs leak from the new needle valve. You have to rap them with the wooden handle of a large screwdriver on the side of the carb the first time you put gas to it - I guess it seats them. I have only had to do this once or twice, then it seats fine every time after that.

Rebuilding the carb should always be part of an overhaul, and is not as complex as it sounds. Look at the jets before you try to remove them. If they look fine, leave them be. It is real easy to bugger up those soft brass jets trying to get them out. I have had my share of drilling them out carefully...

Good luck,
Dan

Thanks guys, I'll get the distributor timing right and I think it'll fire right up. It almost started today immediately after I turned it over the first time, it turns over real nice, and sounds just fine, but I know the timing ain't right yet, gotta do the thumb test for TDC on #1, and set up the distributor to match. It'll run this weekend after it warms up in Cowtown.

Then we'll eyeball the carb.

When I first opened the gas valve on my newly rebuilt Jubilee project tractor I also got a steady drip of gas out of the freshly rebuilt carb. I removed the carb and checked the float level and didn't see any problem. While I had it apart I went ahead and replaced the new neoprene-tipped needle valve with the old all-metal needle. I still had a slight dribble of gas but I after cranking and running a while it seemed to clear up and it runs and idles fine.

However, (just in case) I do close the gas valve when not running.

Have you cranked the engine yet? That first cranking after a rebuild is the most exciting and fearful time:-).

Good luck with it.

It doesn't take much choke application to make gas dribble out of the carb.

If you ever get the darned thing running, and put some hours on it, THEN see how the carb behaves.

(When starting, have the engine cranking over and give the choke a quick "tug and release" or two. Cranking for any length of time will cause the dribbling gas you are seeing.)
