I have seen threads where it is advised not to tell U-haul that you are hauling a tractor on one of their trailers and I am wondering why.

Thanks,

Joel B.

I hauled a 2N from Liberty, NY to Queens, NYC. I rented a single axle trailer from an indepedent pop and son place. Told them exactly what I was goung to haul. Farm tractor about 2500 pounds. They checked their specs for the trailer and no problem. I had on a previous ocasion hauled a CUB with a smaller trailer from them also.

Only problem I've had with U-haul trailers - they won't rent you the "open" carhaulers if you go one way. All the U-haul dealers own the open trailers, so they need them to come back to them.

Must be nice! Around here (NE, MO, KS, IA) they won't let you rent any of them if they find out you are going out of state or one way!

I rented an open car hauler one-way from NC to OH with no problems. Only ones I've seen for local rental only are the really small open trailers for hauling riding lawn mowers and such...

No problem whatsoever.

I hauled my '41 9N from Idaho to Colorado, then to the UP of Michigan, out to the Oregon coast, back to southern Idaho and up to Sandpoint near the Canadian border.

Pulled like a dream behind my F150. I told the U-Haul dealers I was hauling a 1941 Ford convertible. Never had a problem.

I also hauled a Cat D2 from Montana to Washington on one, but that didn't work as well...(grin)

My nickels worth,

Scott

I rented a 9 x 12 dual axel trailer from U-Haul twice this summer.... they asked how much weight adn what was I going to haul it with. The trailer limit is 2800 lbs.... my 9N according to the specs is 2350, thatwas okay and I hauled it with a full size Dodge pickup....no problems. I do not htink that I would want to use this set up if I were going a large distance or if it were going to be really wet, other than that it worked for me.

To my knowledge, UHaul has regulations against hauling tractors. Liability. What I"ve done is reserve the trailer, tell them I"m hauling a 1950 Ford, and no questions asked. Loren-MN

I just never know when them long sections of corral fence might have to be moved. Ya see, a car hauler is the only trailer that has the length.

Probably because they are concerned that you don't have the right hitch. I wanted to haul my new (to me) 9N40864 from north of Bruce Mines, ON to south of Tweed, ON (about 500 miles), so I went to the local U-Haul and talked to them about what I should have. Never had a hint that they were upset that I was hauling a tractor. Lots of cars which would be towed on their trailers weigh more.

I had them install a Class III hitch on my Windstar, and reserved an Auto-Transporter up near the starting point. I was going to go with a lighter hitch until I realized that the trailer alone weighs 2000lbs and the tractor started life at 2350. It has liquid filled tires, chains, and came with a snowthrower attached -- so I figure I was up to about 5000lbs total towed weight.

Worked like a charm. I hope these links to view the pictures work -- I didn't want to have them actually appear in this message because they are so large.

Truthfully, I don't know. I didn't especially look for any markings. I hope to visit it next weekend (it "lives" about 150 miles from my home), and will have a closer look, and snap some photos.

U-Haul is just trying to limit its liability. They don't want anyone to overload the trailer, have an accident and have the injured parties sue U-Haul. Since they hire minimum wage type people to run the counter who don't have any idea how to judge whether or not a trailer is going to be overloaded, they provide the counter help a list of cars with the proper trailer to rent for hauling that vehicle. So if you want a trailer, the U-Haul person will ask you what kind of car you intend to haul. Based on your answer, he/she will look up the proper size trailer and sign you up. If your answer is "Ford 8N tractor" they don't know what to do except to deny you access to their trailers. So instead of telling them it's a tractor, say it's a small Ford but you can't remember the model name. Let the counter guy suggest something like "Escort" then you say "Yeah, that's it!".

I don't have a car trailer but do have a tow truck (not a wrecker you wreck'em we tow'em) when i can not git a trailer I back the tow truck up to the tractor and run a chain around the middle of the tractor and lift with the wrinch and use the wheel lift on the rear tires and haul'em in that way. This is on junk tractors that I find and need to git'em befor thay change their mind. Just hauled a 600 in and lifted the rears and left the front wheels on the ground about 6 miles just went slow. Hauled quite a few Farmalls that way that have broke off the bull gear house'N. Still gonna git a trailer someday look'n fer a deal.

Just one of those things, its a car trailor not a tractor trailor so they flip out when you say tractor but it will haul an 8N with no problem. Shot I knew a guy the hualed his in the back of his pickup. I didn't believe it till he came over with it in his truck

Sorry don't have any pictures and as far I know he sold that 8N and got a new Jap tractor. I do remember it was a 3/4 ton ford and he would back it in so the back tires would sit tight to the front of the bed and sort of on the wheel wells. The front tires where on the tail gate. He brought it to me so I could do a 12 volt convertion on it, and I still have the gen sitting in my shop that I took off of it. He would back the truck up to a bank and drive to tractor right in, or should I say backed it right in

No kidding. I want to see this N haulin pickup. Seems like you'd have to have the tires all the way in to get it to fit. If you've got one, can you post a picture for us?

If you use a car trailer they rent ,shouldnt be a problem. Tractors(8ns) dont weigh very much. I move my on a single axle trailer.

As a tractor dealer and restoration shop,we"ve seen em all. I had a super C hauled in ,in a customers three-quarter ton long bed. The rear tires were on the tailgate, with nothing but the tailgate straps supporting it. Or the guy with the front end of his N on the tailgate , rears on the hottop, tow truck style. As for U-Haul, that is a very popular way , even had new tractors picked up in our yard that way.
